At Folsom Prison two inmates spent months assembling a device with nine foot blades on a car differential. Officials say it was a helicopter type jig though lacking an engine or fuselage and view it as a project not an escape plan.
The Army will release about 20,000 National Guardsmen and reservists by end of next year while raising draft calls by roughly 3,000 per month from March to July to maintain regular force readiness. The plan cancels 48 basic and AIT companies closures, shifts training capacity to REP enlistees, and aims to return about 10,000 mobilized personnel to civilian life by Oct 31 and Dec 15, 1969.
The President's Commission on Violence held back from public view to finish a report on the Chicago antiwar clashes to avoid furor over its study. Anonymous workers pursue gifts for Lubbock children age 14 and under, with 1935 established service now facing greater demand. Immediate needs include daily coupon returns naming underprivileged children and money contributions to buy fruit nuts candy and toys.
