Paralysis Victim Is Man Who Wouldn’t Give Up
JeDon Washington, paralyzed from the waist down by a 1950 diving accident in Ardmore Oklahoma, overcame doctors’ predictions with physical therapy. He learned to sit in a wheelchair in under two years, regained some arm function, paints and draws, graduates from Tom S. Lubbock High School, and plans to freelance art while continuing therapy. His story of determination inspires his family and Alpha Delta Sigma fraternity.

Eastern New Mexico University music professor Dr Merle Hogg on sabbatical in France appeared as composer and trombonist in the American Conservatory program at Fontainebleau. His piece was performed by John Parella and accompanied by Raymond Jackson. Oltman presented Petit Duo for two trombones. Hogg returns to Eastern in September.
Hearing Probes Cause Of Fumes In La Porte
A justice of the peace hears testimony from S&WW Chemical officials to identify the gas fumes that sickened at least 50 people on August 12. Nelson Lewis, plant manager, admits a small phosgene release on July 22 and says employees were fired for carelessness. He denies the plant closed August 12 as over 50 witnesses recount a two hour scare that left men women and children sick but not seriously harmed.

Mother Amputates Son's Mangled Limb on Farm Accident
In Princeton Indiana a 43 year old man, Cyrus Dyer, suffered a severe leg injury when his pants were snagged on a hay baler. His mother Marietta Dyer amputated part of his left leg with a butcher knife before doctors at a Princeton hospital completed the above knee amputation. The incident occurred on the family farm five miles northeast of Princeton.

Rescuers Close In On Miner Trapped After Rockfall
In Johannesburg rescuers edged closer to a lone survivor of a rockfall that killed 12 miners on Tuesday. They reported hearing coherent whispers in response to calls to Oliviera Sitole as the bodies of eleven Africans were identified among the dead.

Police said Barnes driving a 1955 Oldsmobile struck head on near here causing two deaths. The victims were Marion De Mercury on Road 18 and Dale Roger Leach 18 of Alamogordo. Barnes and Leach died instantly with funeral plans pending.
