Francis Gary Powers was sentenced to ten years in a Soviet prison for espionage after a three day trial. The court allowed the possibility of reduction to about seven years for good behavior, and Powers expressed remorse while his family gathered for an hourlong reunion.
Moscow reports a five ton satellite carrying two dogs and a television camera in a near equatorial Earth orbit. The dogs Strelka and Belka are among the animals aboard the craft launched to study life in space and return methods. Soviet scientists offered few specifics on recovery plans or timing, but said the mission aimed to advance manned space life support.
In Lubbock County Court at Law No. 2 Judge Pat Moore handled 33 liquor violation cases as 14 defendants pled innocent. Leon Bowman of the Lubbock District Liquor Control Board said undercover raids spanned 10 days with 2 agents and 6 inspectors, amid rising bootleg activity after Garza County’s liquor sale legalization near the city.
In Moscow Francis Gai Powers received a 10 year spying sentence. His wife Barbara and his parents met him in a room behind the courtroom for an hour and fifteen minutes before he was escorted to a prison cell. Guards remained present as three Virginia lawyers and two doctors joined the family briefly.
U S ambassador Henry Zabot Lodge resigned effective Sept 3 to pursue the Republican bid for vice president. President Eisenhower accepted with deep regret and named James J Wadsworth to replace Lodge, noting Wadsworth headed the UN delegation to Geneva talks and has served since 1953. Nixon announced the selection as part of the GOP campaign plan.

In Pecos a soda truck veered after brake failure, pinned across a ditch and slammed into the Tudor home while the family ate lunch. Three children aged 3, 6, and 8 died. their mother, 27, suffered shock and minor injuries and was hospitalized. The driver, Joe D. Cannon, 28, said to have attempted a turn.
