A series of powerful earthquakes near Yellowstone caused landslides that buried campsites and trapped travelers. Authorities reported dozens dead or missing, with hundreds endangered as Hebgen Dam concerns arose and rescue efforts intensified across Montana.
Desert floods from a cloud burst pounded the California Arizona desert for hours. A 25 foot crest struck a two ton truck and sent it rolling. At least two railway workers aboard were killed and a survivor swept over a mile. Route 66 was blocked with bridges torn out and 200 cars stranded. Four vehicles were washed away after drivers fled to higher ground.
Yellowstone area residents recount the Hebgen Lake quake and landslide with cars abandoned on roads, shaking mountains, and fear in their voices. Survivors compare the event to the end of the world as aftershocks continue and rocks tumble.
The bones of Pearl Ada Putney, a Washington DC widow once sought nationwide, were found in Sierra foothills California a year after last seen with ex convict Larry Motherwell. Alma Freeman found skeletal remains identified by dental records. skull and fragments recovered.
Trustees adopted a 7.88 million dollar budget for 1959-60 with a 1.65 per hundred tax rate. The operating budget stands at 6.52 million with 1.23 million reserved for debt service and 42 thousand for delinquent tax transfers. Local revenues total about 4.20 million, funded by a 260 million total district valuation with 93 percent expected collections.
The City Planning and Zoning Commission approved a 20 acre shopping center at 50th Street and Avenue H along with two other zone changes. The action included a specific use permit allowing C 4 uses with deletions to avoid nuisances near homes. Plot and ingress plans will follow for Commission ratification.
A strong storm lashed Midland and the Permian Basin with 65 mph winds and heavy rain, demolishing buildings and unroofing others while a trucking company building collapsed without injuries. The system dropped up to 1.5 inches of rain in Midland as power lines failed in the northwest sector, and a large rain belt moved across West Texas with thunderstorms on the South Plains. Big Bend areas saw beneficial rainfall, Alpine reporting 1.11 inches and 2 inches south of there, with highways flooded and creeks running high.

Lubbock County voters rejected a special 15 cent highway maintenance tax to fund right of way for four lane routes. The unofficial tally showed 2 034 against and 1 832 for the measure from 44 precincts with about 3 858 ballots cast. The defeat halts a planned 31 million in four lane expansions and five year funding totaling 1 250 000 for right of way. The measure would have created three spokes connecting Lubbock to Abernathy U S Highways 87 and 84. County officials and a 61 member citizens committee led by Roy Bass urged passage.
The Senate passed a $1.05 billion housing bill 71 to 24 after rejecting major concessions to President Eisenhower. The measure preserves key government backed programs, expands FHA insurance, and authorizes a $50 million fund for new college classroom construction, despite GOP and southern Democrat opposition. The bill moves to the House, which is not expected to act quickly.
NASA reported a malfunction in the second stage of a two stage Nike Aasp rocket launched from Wallops Island Virginia on Tuesday night. The 27 foot rocket was to reach about 150 miles altitude and ignite a sodium thermite payload to study winds in the upper atmosphere.
