A chaotic scene in Los Angeles leaves four dead as rioters loot and set fires across commercial districts. Police struggle to contain the unrest amid growing national attention and widespread property damage.
Five U S Navy aircraft were downed by small arms and anti aircraft fire during recon flights over North Viet Nam. Three pilots were rescued, one missing presumed dead, another missing. An observation plane crashed in South Viet Nam with two crew presumed dead. Marines launched a large scale night helicopter assault near Da Nang with one Viet Cong killed and about 20 captured.
The United States nears a diplomatic rupture with the Congo Republic over mistreatment of American diplomats. The embassy in Brazzaville is closed as Congo authorities expel staff and the U S warns of deteriorating ties.
The Senate approved a resolution to name the new lake behind Sanford Dam on the Canadian River in Texas Lake Meredith in honor of the late A. A. Meredith of Berger Texas a longtime project advocate and civic figure.
Italian police reported a theft at Linda Christian's Rome apartment with furs and jewels valued at about 16000 dollars. Police said part of the loot has been recovered.
An editor's note recounts an eight hour riot in Los Angeles with whites targeted in a neighboring all white area. Eyewitness Robert Richardson describes gun sightings, car beatings, car arsons, and cries of Lynwood as mobs attacked white motorists and bystanders.
NASA announced that Gemini 11 astronauts Lt Colonel L Gordon Cooper Jr and Lt Commander Charles Conrad Jr will be kept in seclusion for 11 days after their eight day space flight. The period covers medical tests and pilot reporting with no postflight interviews or White House visits. A later NASA note requested edits to the release.
NASA reported the Gemini 4 crew James A. McDivitt and Edward H. White failed to provide adequate rest periods. After a rush of Washington and community welcomes, they were sent to Paris with Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey to attend an international air show. NASA later withdrew from its See ASTRONAUTS Page 8.
Hundreds of angry Black residents attacked near a West Side fire station after a fire engine killed a bystander. Police, reserves, and canine units flooded the area as rioters hurled rocks and bricks injuring several, including UPI reporter Michael Roster. Civil rights leaders urged calm.
A demonstrator was shot dead at 97th and Figueroa as rioting spread from a few blocks to miles. Nearly 1,000 police, sheriff and California Highway Patrol fought the unrest through day and night. Thirty major fires burned stores from supermarkets to a department store, with looting and violent clashes overwhelming fire crews. President Johnson ordered Air Force transport for Gov. Edmund Brown as the National Guard mobilized to restore order.
