Southern Negroes register to vote amid rights drive
The Associated Press reports Southern Black voters surge toward the polls under the new voting rights law. About 1,230 Negroes have registered in Americas Georgia since enactment, while federal registrars operate in nine counties across Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Alabama counties convene to review literacy tests as registration rises in Lowndes and Wilcox. A federal suit challenges the law’s constitutionality in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, with Governor McKeithen backing the effort.
