New York stocks rose on heavy volume in a month. The AP stock average climbed 1.3 to 272.3 as leaders across steels, motors, rubbers, utilities, nonferrous metals, chemicals, rails, airlines and drugs led a broad advance. Aircrafts and tobaccos fell.
Stocks advance with the Dow Jones industrials up 4.21 to 708.39 and rails and utilities also higher. Market breadth shows gains across railroads utilities and industrials as futures and bonds mixed.
A chaotic session shows scattered gains and declines across sectors with investors parsing bid and ask levels. Major names including Keystone, American funds and Union funds appear amid volatile quotes and shifting valuations.
New York AP reports corporate bond prices edged higher while most Treasury bonds held steady. On the NYSE, $4.76 million par value of corporate bonds traded with 113 issues up, 100 down, 96 flat. Several issues reached highs while six hit year lows. notable movers included Missouri Pacific 4s 2030 at 74, Chicago & Eastern Illinois 5s 2054 at 45. Northern Natural Gas 4s 1977 rose to 103, while losers included Chicago Milwaukee St Paul & Pacific 4s 1994 at 80 and Consumers Power 4s 1987 at 103.
New York bond sales and closing notes list major transactions in U.S. Government Treasuries and corporate issues on Friday. The report shows bid, asked, and yield figures, with totals for bonds traded, along with Treasury note prices and market summaries.
AP reports a modest trading session with gains in stocks and steady bonds. Cotton futures swing, wheat and corn mixed, soybeans show some liquidation. cottonseed oil declines noted amid light volume and Washington news awaited.
Demand for butcher hogs reached 4 500 head with prices steady to firm and some sales up 25 cents. Top hogs traded 190 to 239 per cwt. mixed lot prices ranged 1818.35 and 1316.05 for different grades. Week's cattle turnout 26 500, down from 28 500 last week, with slaughter steers steady to 25 cents higher and prime stock reaching 295.78 per cwt. Sheep and lambs showed unchanged to higher bids on mixed good to choice grades. Fort Worth reports similar cattle and hog activity with calves, cows, and feeder steers priced accordingly.
