Aggies End Ban on Women Admitted as Day Students

Hearing Set On 20th St Zoning Plan In Lubbock

Public hearing Tuesday night before the City Planning and Zoning Commission in City Hall about adding 54 acres of strip commercial zoning along 50th Street and blocks for apartments. If approved, total commercial zoning would exceed 217 acres along a five mile stretch from Avenue A to Slide Road with Mth Street already at 199 percent. The plan aims to boost business use amid underdeveloped land.

UT President Smiley Resigns to Lead Colorado University

AP reports University of Texas President Joseph R. Smiley resigns effective July 1 to become president of the University of Colorado. Chancellor Harry Ransom notes the challenge of the Colorado post and Smiley cites the honor of the new role. Smiley, 53, became UT president May 13, 1961 after serving as VP and provost since August 1960 and previously led Texas Western in El Paso.

Crash Kills Lynn Man in Broadside Collision Near Woodrow

An elderly Lynn County man, William Charles Felty, 74, was killed when his westbound car on FM 41 was struck broadside by a northbound vehicle on U S 47 near Woodrow. Kenneth Carmichael, 22, and Brenda Carmichael, 22, sustained injuries. he was hospitalized for minor injuries, she for a fractured leg and abrasions. Midland voters reject courthouse and civic center measures

Midland voters rejected a 1.1 million courthouse expansion and a 2.5 million civic center plan, with turnout over 60 percent of qualified voters. The courthouse measure drew 3,041 for and 3,620 against, while the civic center failed 2,014 to 4,628, with 6,735 total ballots unofficially counted.
