Plainview Man Killed in Hit and Run on U S 70

A 46 year old Plainview man repairing a flat tire on his pickup was killed when struck by a hit and run driver on U S 70 near Plainview at 5 30 p m. The driver admitted passing the scene but denied striking the victim. Joe Woodfin Rob Sr died at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock from a severe head wound. License numbers were recorded by passerby Glen Brotherton as investigators sought witnesses. Blood and hair on a truck clearance light were noted as evidence. Lab tests will determine if samples match the victim.

Havana Raid Report Confirmed By Radio Broadcast

A Havana radio broadcast verified a New York photographer's claim that he and three companions carried out a futile air raid on an oil refinery near Havana. Photographer Alexander Rorke Jr said he filmed the event while the others spoke at Ashington. The AP monitored the Havana report in Key West noting a twin engine plane attacked the refinery around 9 p.m. EST.

Clovis Couple Found Slain In Home

A man and his wife, parents of ten, were found shot to death in their bedroom Friday morning in Clovis. Police said Pauline Luna was beaten with a hammer and shot twice, while her husband Mike Luna suffered a single head wound. A hammer and 32 caliber pistol lay nearby. The couple’s son woke to the scene and alerted authorities about 10:30 am. All ten children are cared for by relatives. four or five still live at home as the family awaits funeral arrangements.

Khrushchev Pledges Soviet Support for Geneva Pact

In a Moscow three hour conference with W Averell Harriman Premier Khrushchev pledged renewed Soviet backing for the Geneva agreements on Laos peace and neutrality. A communique noted mutual understanding reached between the United States and the Soviet Union and referenced Kennedy’s letter delivered by Harriman. Reports from Laos said fighting continued between pro Communist Pathet troops and right wing forces with neutralists in Plaine des Jarres threatening civil war.

West Virginia mine blast Buries 22 workers

Rescue teams located all 22 miners, most burned, in a methane gas and coal dust explosion at a northern West Virginia mine near Clarkeburg. The last body was found at 7:40 p.m. CST, as officials planned a federal and state investigation into the disaster.

Tornadoes Strike Scurry Decatur and North Texas

Severe thunderstorms tore through West and North Central Texas on Friday ripping up trees and homes and knocking out power and phones.
