Bill Would Free Pecos River Water By Eradicating Salt Cedars
Washington report notes hearings on a bill by Congressman Joe Pool to empower the Interior Department to remove salt cedars from 50 000 acres of the Pecos River upper reaches. Pool says the trees consume 200 000 acre feet annually, choking irrigation for Texas. He cites Red Bluff Reservoir shortages and quotes Texas Water Commission chief engineer Vander Tulip on the costly but necessary federal role, countering Rep Ed Foreman who favors local action.
