Man Killed In Collision Near Levelland

A head on crash 1.8 miles southwest of Levelland left Francisco Vasquez 43 dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital Lubbock. Clifton Wayne Turner 19 of Rt 5 Levelland survived in satisfactory condition. Two others were injured as voters in South Plains held about 60 city elections that day.

Evans Junior High Girl Wins County Spelling Bee

Becky Bailey, 12, of Evans Junior High School, captured the Lubbock County spelling title after a two and a half hour contest. Abby Wilkerson finished second after misspelling epitome, with Becky later correctly spelling escrow to clinch the win. Becky will represent the county at the regional bee on May 1.
