Train Strike Continues as Union Chief Defies Court

A federal court order to halt the walkout was rejected by Hoof Gilbert, head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, who said the strike remains on. Gilbert and Labor Secretary Wirtz held hours of talks in Washington after the overnight walkout, with 8,000 firemen still off the job and an appeal filed against the restraining order.

National rail strike triggers emergency actions across the United States

Anonymous sources describe a strike labeled national emergency with real national interest and concern. The administration moved into transportation emergency with hundreds of trains halted from Maine to California and from the plains to the Gulf. Exodus New Jersey Move Aims Growth For Church of Christ

A group of 82 Church of Christ members from seven states headed to Newark and then Somerville New Jersey for a two day job interview conference. About 114 families and 300 individuals plan to help expand the church in Somerset County relocating from Golf Course Road Midland. They will cover all moving costs and many have sold homes and businesses. Interviews for business industrial and professional personnel occur at Somerville First Baptist Church with about 40 teaching job candidates interviewed Saturday. The group plans to return once interviews conclude.

Estes Back In State for Hearing On Case

Estes, former Texas financier and millionaire, returned from Ft Leavenworth to El Paso for an April 11 hearing before U S District Judge Leo Brewster on his motion for vacation of sentence and a new trial. His attorney cites new evidence. A pre hearing conference is set for April 8. Estes serves a 15 year term for conspiracy to commit fraud.

Six Dead and Sixty Seven Hurt in Saigon Attack

A Viet Cong assault on the Victoria Hotel billet in Saigon killed three Americans and three Vietnamese and wounded about 100, including 67 Americans. The truck bomb shattered the first three floors as guards and MPs faced small arms, grenades, and a possible Claymore mine. Ambassador Lodge visited the scene. a pattern seen in prior U.S. installations attacks.

Fair Board OKs Tennessee Ernie Ford At Fair

Embers of the Panhandle-South Plains Fair directors voted unanimously to contract with Tennessee Ernie Ford for the 1968 exposition. Ford will perform twice daily September 26 to October 1 at the Fair Park Coliseum with a 5,000 seating capacity and advance reserved seating. The $35,000 base plus potential 60 percent of gate after taxes, plus total expenses over $40,000, aims to deliver a high profile entertainment feature for patrons.

Four burglars wearing masks robbed the Harbour Isle Spa Hotel safety deposit boxes near the police station in a 40 minute heist.
