Tornado Touches Down Near Floydada Sparks Outage

Severe thunderstorms across the South Plains produced a small tornado near Floydada that damaged a packing shed and an irrigation well, pulled a power pole, and plunged Floydada into darkness for minutes. Rainfall varied from trace to over an inch across towns from Morton to Plainview as crews logged scattered measurements.

13 Persons Three Are Hurt In Lubbock Traffic Mishaps

Thirteen people were hurt in traffic mishaps on Lubbock streets and other South Plains points Sunday. A Steeley family of three sustained injuries near Lockney when their car overturned on FM Road 378, 144 miles north. The father lost control while attempting to pull the car back onto the highway. Two other incidents involved a youth treated then released from Methodist Hospital, and a motorcycle car crash near Anton. Two brothers were hurt when their pickup overturned during a coyote hunt near Nazareth. one was admitted for observation.

Bandit Robs Lamesa Drive-In Cashier for 120

A teenaged bandit wearing a ragged sack mask robbed Skyview Drive-In Theatre cashier at 10 p.m. Sunday 114 miles north on U S 87. He held his hand in his coat pocket and threatened a gun, taking 120 dollars. The cashier’s name was not released.

Britain and United States unite against anti exile raids on Cuba

Britain joined the United States in efforts to curb exile raids on Cuba. London ordered the frigate Londonderry to patrol the Bahamas while Caribbean authorities pledged to prevent use of British territory for illicit purposes. Senate leaders urged action to halt hit and run raids and the State and Justice Departments announced measures to stop exile attacks originating on U.S. soil including Puerto Rico.

Burglary and theft report hits Lubbock area homes

Police reported multiple incidents including burglary at a Lubbock home where cash and camera equipment valued at over 2530 were stolen. City Church Fills Post

Banowsky, minister of the South Gate Church of Christ in Los Angeles, named minister of the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock. He will assume duties June 1 and preached his first sermon Sunday. He succeeds George Stephenson who left to lead South Side Church of Christ in Fort Worth. Banowsky also serves on the Pepperdine College faculty and has roles in Bible lectureships and student affairs in Los Angeles. He holds a BA from Davis Lipa.

Buried Victim in Florida Auto Thief Admits Carlsbad Slaying

A Carlsbad man admitted killing the car owner after a motel room dispute and placing the body in a foot locker bought at a surplus store. He fled with the loot to Florida where the body was buried after being found by a bulldozer during excavation near West Palm Beach. The suspect, linked to a prior theft case, described the sequence of events to FBI agents.

Former Plainview contractor killed in private plane crash

Coleman Wade, a Plainview Texas contractor for grain elevator projects, died in a private aircraft crash eight miles NW of Jill on Sunday. FAA investigators worked with New Mexico State Police to determine the crash origin and fate of the Bonanza wreck. Wade’s body was taken to Griffin Funeral Home in Hobbs and may be moved to Altus for services.

IRS Reports Collections Hire Computer Buys Tax Cheaters

Washington reports that the Internal Revenue Service plans to expand automated data processing to improve tax collection. Commissioner Mortimer Caplin told a House subcommittee that ADP will raise revenue, not merely cut costs, with individual taxpayer IDs and cross checking of payments and returns. Publicity has spurred about 1,000 voluntary amended returns, and nationwide ADP rollout is seen by 1946.
