By a broken cable in the Northwest Land Tunnel construction elevator shaft three colored workers were raised and plunged ninety five feet to the bottom. One man died instantly while the other two suffered fatal injuries and are listed in serious condition.
Victor Anderson of Whitedale killed his elderly mother in Manistique Michigan, firing four shots into her heart in a premeditated murder. A letter found blamed life as a burden and indicated both would die. Anderson was a prominent farmer.
Rome reports all arrangements for the cession of Kassala to Great Britain are complete and troops are ready to occupy the town. Kassala lies in Abyssinia between Khartoum and Massawa at the junction of three telegraph lines.

The Old Middlesex chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution plans to mark the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. The shower yesterday evening saw a bolt strike Albert L. Warren at 344 Lamb Street tearing off several clapboards but causing no major damage. Mr and Mrs Warren felt only a brief shock and were downstairs. they discovered the damage on climbing to retire, with a window frame blown outward. No fire started.
Superior Court session before Judge Lilley opened the case OBrien versus the City of Lowell. City Solicitor Qua stated the city was not negligent and used standard methods in Billings street sewer construction. Proceedings not finished at noon.
A fire broke out in the picker room of the Tremont and Suffolk mills triggering an early morning alarm from box 128. Flames were contained by firefighters with little damage. cause under investigation by the company.
A laborer collapsed and died of heart trouble at the Rescue Mission on Kneeland street, Boston. Papers identify him as James McKay of Lowell, age about 50, with a sister at the Massachusetts Corporation in Boston. A reporter found Mr McKay alive at his home. The Prescott mill overseer could not confirm the identity. A crowd of operatives lingered at the gate, unsure if he would appear for work.
The Republican councillor convention will be held at Huntington hall on Thursday Oct 7 at 11 o clock a m. The county convention is held in the same place on the Tuesday previous at 10 30 a m.
Seven Vesper Country Club canoeists traveled by train to Concord yesterday morning and paddled back to Lowell down the Concord River in a daytime excursion marked by skilled strokes and teamwork.

Rally Sunday observed by half the Sunday schools in the city as part of the Massachusetts Sunday School association plan for renewed mission interest and reconsecration. In Lowell the day featured temperance and Christian giving proofs with well paced exercises. Diplomas were awarded to Mary Farris Effie Allen Maud Markee Esther Turner Edith Sweatt Ethel Smith Florence Jacobs Frances Dunning Ina Gordon Gustie Stewart Raymond Coffin Arthur Smith George Jessop Mary Quimby.
The rally at First Baptist drew 735 attendees including 657 pupils and teachers with Supt. H. L. Tibbetts presiding. Rev. Smith Ford preached on Christian education linking religious training to national safeguarding while noting Catholic and European contrasts. Rev Geo F Keangott used seeds and nature to illustrate sowing and reaping from Galatians. 443 children attended across Junior to Senior departments, each receiving fruit gifts, with autumn decor and strong choral singing by the children under Mrs Kenngett.
Yesterday observances at Mt Vernon Free Baptist Church marked Rally Sunday with full services throughout the day. The church was attractively decorated with evergreen, drawing a largely attended gathering.
Edward Shea appeared in Police court charged with stealing 2200 trading coupons from the Hub clothing company in Middlesex street. Manager Samuel Hermanson began noting shortages in mid August and observed possible disposal of coupons. Shea denied theft at first, later saying customers sometimes gave coupons to him. Bonds set at $800 to Sept. 30. Also noted are various minor fines and several jail or workhouse sentences in other cases, including a man who fled from the city farm.
Citizens invite the Sixth Infantry to field day in Southbridge with mobilization set for October 6. Companies A H and L depart Boston at 7 am, others by rail. Morning manoeuvres attack on Southbridge, under Col Woodward and Col Parsons, 40 yard distance rules. Dinner provided, return home around 6 30 pm.
Ellen Gallagher died at 3.45 this morning at the Wilder street home of her son in law J L Chalifoux after months of ill health from paralysis. A Lowell native for 56 years she came from Boston on marriage to James Gallagher who later worked as a paymaster and died in California. Survived by daughters Sarah J. Russell of Seattle and Mrs Chalifoux, funeral at St Joseph's church at 9 a m Wednesday with no flowers requested.
Mrs Allura W Evans aged 82 died at Mrs Shattuctes residence 23 Marshals Street she was the widow of James Evans Oliver Flint aged 63 died at his Woodward avenue home He leaves a son George Flint of the fire department two brothers George and Charlies and two sisters Mrs George Cheney and Mrs Norman Burnham He was a member of Merrimack lodge 1 C O F Monomake encampment and Canton Pawtucket Patriarchs Militant.
Funeral services were held Saturday for James Roche at St Patrick's with solemn mass by Fathers Burke Welch and Leonard. Bearers included James Delehanty Benard Gannon Michael Riley Daniel Owen Quinn and John Flood. Interment followed at Catholic cemetery with Undertaker O'Donnell. Also Saturday afternoon Hugh B Boyle was buried in Catholic cemetery with Undertaker Molloy. Napoleon Bergeron died Saturday and funeral was Sunday at 3 pm from 440 Central Street with burial at St Joseph's cemetery under Undertaker Joseph Ibert.
Mrs. C. J. Darracott will spend the winter with her son in California. Rev. Hugh Montgomery, once a resident of the city, suffers failing eyesight. Miss Gertrude Johnson of Dorchester, Notre Dame Academy graduate, visits Mrs. D. O'Brien. In New York names such as Astor and Swift are mentioned along with Mrs Gleason and Miss Judkins. Tragedian Warren Conlan passed through the city and will perform Othello at the Opera house on Oct. 5. Wm. McGrath of Danbury, a former B. and M. railroad engineer, had a cataract removed by Dr. Stephenson at Lowell General Hospital. Mrs. Wm. Giroux returns from a Canada vacation in improved health. Mrs. A. Bureau accompanies her and visits Miss Adele Roy at corner West 6th and Corbin streets.

Octave Chouinard aged 7 weeks child of Octave Courteau and Eugenie Courteau. Narcisse Seucl aged 18 months child of Napoleon and Rosanna Seucl. Maud Rourke nurse aged 27 dies at state almshouse in Tewksbury. Joseph Tebo aged 65 dies in Carlisle.
James H. Ibers tried to bargain with Armenians who run a fruit stand opposite Manchester police station. When he could not get a lower price he shook the grapes and assaulted them after interference by the Armenians. Police stopped the fight and Ibers was fined five dollars plus costs.
