Three men were killed and several others injured in a collision between New York Central train No. 155 bound west and an east bound freight at Wheeler's bridge near Auburn New York at 6 this morning. The wreck occurred just outside city limits.
Sylvester John Curtis, longtime New York Stock Exchange member since 1867, died in New York today. Born September 30, 1826 in Meriden Connecticut, he formerly ran a dry goods business and later entered banking in 1861, retiring in 1878. He leaves a widow, son, and daughter. He distributed nearly two million dollars in property to family about six months ago. the residuary estate remains to be probated. Funeral services will be at 39 West 20th Street and interment at Middletown Connecticut.
On the Erin in New York Sept 25 an official statement said Designer Fife would not be involved in steering the Shamrock for the forthcoming international races. Captains Hogarth and
Yacht Erin carried Hon Bourke Cochran Judge Kehoe Col Sharwood Crawford H C Kelly Hugh MacGildowney Col Emmett Mrs Emmett and two daughters and Arthur Iselin to the Atlante Highlands for a lunch on board as Shamrock’s owner welcomed guests. The Shamrock did not sail today while wind reached 25 mph from the southeast. Columbia arrived at New Rochelle from Bristol with C Oliver Iselin expressing satisfaction with the cup defender’s performance.
About 6000 attended the New Jersey State fair opening at Trenton for National Cycle Association events. Five mile professional title won by Al Newhouse of Buffalo with time 11 49 2 5. Other results include W Fred Simms 60 yards in one mile, Owen Ss Kimble winning half mile, Wizard S Candle leading amateur handicap, and George Cordette taking the one mile amateur open.
California boxer Joe Choynski defeated Jim Hall of Australia by knockout in the third round at Music Hall Louisville before 2500 spectators. The bout was billed as a light heavyweight title fight division of box office receipts. Hall weighed 168 pounds to Choynski 160, with Hall leading early rounds and Choynski delivering decisive rights and lefts late in the third. Some spectators cried fake as Hall fell and was counted out.
Lawrence Sept 25 Hon Joseph J Flynn will accept the Democratic nomination for state treasurer at Thursday's convention. His initial decline followed by pressure from party leaders led him to reconsider and he has written to the state committee accepting the nomination though he plans to seek the Democratic congressional nomination again.
Boston September 25 Hon Edward S Bradford former Springfield state senator announced his decision to seek the Republican state convention nomination for state treasurer. His headquarters are at the Adams house and supporters will mount a vigorous campaign until the convention.
In Kittery, Eliot and York caucuses selected delegates to the first district Republican convention in Portland on September 28. Eliot and Kittery delegates pledged to Amos L. Allen for Congress, while York delegates supported James T. Davidson of York.

Dr Herman Wadsworth Hayley of Wesleyan University Middletown Conn an instructor of Latin and son of Rev J W Hayley Lowell died by self inflicted throat cutting at the United States hotel Boston Mass The death followed concerns over his mental health and overwork He was about 35 years old and had recently warned of possible insanity The body was taken to the undertakers and reports traced his movements from West Concord N H to Middletown and Boston with his funeral planned for West Concord and burial in Franklin
A man staying at the Grand Union hotel under the alias Sk. G. Andrews, reportedly a former Old Colony railroad superintendent from Rockland Mass, died by his own hand in his room. An envelope on the bureau mentions Flora E. Allen of Uxbridge care of N. A. Boss and a note signed EB. G. ALLEN. Police investigator Delaney notes two Boston Globe clippings in the luggage. William C. Allen of 277 Columbus Avenue was seen by a reporter after receiving a message.
A stylishly dressed woman buncoed a Carter & Sherburne clerk for 9.50 yesterday. She paid with a crumpled $10 bill marked with a 1 in the corner, claimed cough balsam, rushed for a car, and vanished before change could be given. The clerk later discovered the error and scam.
In police court William McBride was tried for larceny from the person over a diamond stud stolen from George H. Hooper on a Boston bound train Aug 3. Hooper testified he, McBride, and two others played whist on the train and McBride with one other man seized the diamond as Hooper prepared to depart. Judge Hadley found McBride probably guilty and held him under $600 for the grand jury.
Mrs. Edward Gaffney badly burned by a lamp thrown by her husband Saturday night is improving at St. John's hospital. Mrs. Josephine Navaishe, another victim of her husband’s brutal assault, rests comfortably. Hannah Labourd, found unconscious from gas, at Lowell hospital, will be discharged soon as her condition is satisfactory.
The Spanish War Veterans celebrated moving to new quarters on Monday evening with a smoke talk and social after a business session. New rooms are at the Wamesit Bank building corner of Middlesex and Thorndike streets, tastefully decorated with the national colors. John J. Gair was elected financial secretary and regular meetings set for the first and third Thursdays. A sick committee was appointed for wards 1 through 9 and Commander William Fairweather among others. The group voted to observe the organization anniversary on June 23 each year.
Meriden Connecticut September 25 Thomas Kelly aged 17 a Middles town high school football team member died at the city hospital tonight from injuries suffered in a game with Meriden high school last Saturday He sustained a concussion of the spine.
Highland School overcrowding sparked a lengthy Lowell School Board meeting. Supt Whitcomb will petition the city council for an eight room addition. Other items included teacher transfers and certificates, resignations, and debates over district attendance and boundary lines.
Middlesex county commissioners approve project to widen Dover Street, cutting about fourteen feet from J W Daniels of Tewksbury property. Daniels laments loss of a rare stone wall and a long view, while surveyors lay boundary lines and road work nears. Daniels, described as a robust elder with deep ties to the land, supervises the site from his grove of white oaks by the river.
In Lowell land taking suit Daniel Gage estimates damage at 147000 while the Dame versus Tirrell jury awards 534.20 to the plaintiff. Ora Lyell civil engineer testifies with drawings on land and buildings. Gage claims doubled storage capacity and notes ice field value.
In a police court session Jennie Mellen and Delia Connors were released after drunkenness charges. Thomas H. Dever and William Butcher were sentenced to the State farm. Peter Defre and Frank Harvey paid fines of $5 each. Patrick McCormick, living at 46 Adams Street, faced liquor keeping charges. Officers Goodwin and Welsh observed activity at his place, with a half barrel and a partly full quart bottle found. McCormick admitted the liquor and claimed others were boarders. he was found guilty and fined $75, with a $300 appeal bond set for the superior court. Cornelius Cotter, who runs a Willie Street store, admitted keeping liquor and paid $100. Arthur Pomelfears’s assault case was continued to October 3. William White’s support complaint was postponed to Thursday. Edward Bellmore pleaded guilty to vagrancy and was sent to the State farm. John and Catherine Connors’s liquor charge was continued to tomorrow.
