In Manila on September 25 insurgents captured the Urdanetta gunboat in the Arani river NW of Manila bay. An officer and nine crewmen were missing. The gunboat Petrel found the Urdanetta beached opposite Orani. The vessel was riddled and burned, with guns and ammunition seized and the crew either imprisoned or killed.
Despatches from Gen. Otis report Negros insurgents ready to recognize US authority with an election planned for October 2. The American flag will be raised on the Sulu Islands. Zaboanga leaders seek conditions Otis will not accept.
The nineteen year old Myrtle Winters of Kansas City, daughter of James W. Winters, suffers a breakdown after threats from a rejected suitor. She collapsed after a church encounter, cried for protection, and has since been treated as insane. Doctors diagnosed the condition and she was moved to City Hospital. The assailant’s name is being withheld pending evidence.
Julia Dent Grant becomes wife of Prince Michael Cantacuzene at All Saints chapel in a formal Newport ceremony attended by Major-General Miles and other dignitaries. Bishop Potter officiated. late onlookers note the bridal party, gown, and royal uniform amid floral settings. The couple departed for New York and St Petersburg.
The battleship Kearsarge left anchorage at 9 30 for the official trial trip off Cape Ann amid excellent weather. A second report notes the voyage began at 10 26 this morning with smooth seas and moderate wind near Rockport as the ship headed out.
Mrs. Baker, custodian of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and descendant of the Hathaways, died today in Stratford-on-Avon after an accident. The death is noted in London with the Sept. 25 report.
In San Francisco on September 24 authorities announced Sergt Garity of Lowell will be promoted to second lieutenant replacing Lieut Byrne who has resigned. The 26th Regiment will sail aboard the transport Grant tomorrow forenoon and depart for Manila by sundown. The Grant will travel via Japan for coaling and will not visit Honolulu.
At a directors meeting of the Railroad National Bank fore noon, George S. Motley was selected to fill the vacancy created by the death of Major Edward T. Rowell.
Mrs. Delia M Foote of 108 Chapel street reports to police that a man who called at her home near Mein street crossing Billerica Centre attempted a criminal assault while she was alone with her children. She says she shot at him twice and was confined to the house for two days before moving to 108 Chapel street in this city.
The defence in the case admitted the signatures but said the notes were given only as an accommodation. Among the suits to come up at this session is Muldoon versus the city of Lowell.
Miss Florence Wheaton of 7 Moreland Street Roxbury Mass died Sept 24 A prayer service at home followed by church rites at The Church of The New Jem Roxbury Interment details omitted Ambulance transported Peter Bailey from Walker Street crossing after a fractured ankle to 259 Adams Street for home care.
Superior Court session opens with Daniel Gage suing the city of Lowell for damages for taking land on Pawtucket street to change the grade crossing. Jury view ordered after judge charges. map shown. city seeks fair market value and damages for land and ice-houses. Also heard is a separate promissory note action for $500 by George P. Greenwood.
A large blaze gutted the old Branch street skating rink home to Moxie Nerve Food and Standard Bottling Co. Losses range from 50 to 60 thousand dollars with 35 to 40 thousand for Moxie and 15 to 20 thousand for Standard Bottling. Firefighters confined the flames after five hours as onlookers watched from Branch and Middlesex streets.
Visitors to Lowell rode two special electrics crowded with youths. After a cakewalk they returned to the cars near 2 a.m. when the first car derailed at a long stone wall, blocking passage for the second. Passengers and staff jumped clear. crews worked to realign the rail.
The Emergency gang, frostbitten yet cheerful, reboarded the car after a pause on the rails and continued toward Lawrence. They reached town just before 3 o clock as city bells tolled. While waiting, onlookers found it amusing to watch the members struggle to stay warm. On the return trip they were too cold to sing.
Visitors to Worcester city were misidentified as Boston Paving Company officials. The Worcester street committee toured Lowell to inspect paving work, accompanied by two Boston Paving reps. The company reportedly paid the bills, potentially easing tensions with city officials who felt overlooked.
City hall session adds 141 names to voter rolls with most from ward six and ward forty seven. Ward Three Republican club plans Highland hall rally tonight with cigars and speakers. Two men who addressed political circulars testify work occurred a mile from city institution. Republican city committee meets at 7 46 p m. Ward nine secretary Pickering calls meeting at 7 30 p m. Ward four Republicans rally at Good Templars hall Gorham street at 7 45 p m with phonograph selections by Uriah Battye.
At a meeting of the Lowell and Suburban conductors and motormen the committee reported that management agreed to the wage increase. From Oct 1 regular men will get 20 cents more per hour. Spare men with over one year’s service will receive the same. Other spare men gain the full rate after one year. Spare men with under one year receive 18 cents per hour.
The Y M C I elected last week a trustee to fill Charles C Green's vacancy, Thomas Tobin as literary committee member, James Mylott as vice, James Finnerty on bowling committee, with Thomas Kelley James McMahon and Joseph Burns also named. The Burns committee begins work on a club tournament. Also noted is Owen J Carney recovering from a recent runaway injury and seen on the street. An ad promotes The Thompson Hardware Co Ideal Food Cutter at $1.40 for fruit and vegetable preparation.
The text lists Herringbones Whipcards Coverts and Undressed Worsteds with former gil prices 122 dollars. After Setud's the display is greatly diminished but many value items remain for shoppers seeking bargains.
On Monday Judge Hadley presided over a crowded docket of drunks with fines paid into the court’s treasury. Notable cases included John E. McCarthy found guilty of drunkenness for $5, Thomas Wynn fined $6 for drunken conduct in Prescott street, and Napoleon Bruneau held for superior court after a $5 fine. Several others faced jail, probation, or $5 fines. A separate larceny case involved Napoleon Lanctot, a soldier, and Edward J. Gaffney’s assault case was postponed. The Armenian dice players were released after no statute was found governing the act.
Hannah Labourd about 40 years old was found unconscious in a room at 50 Lea Street after gas exposure. Dr McGannon treated her and at Lowell Hospital it was reported she would recover. Mrs W H Jordan owned the house and said Labourd planned to miss breakfast that morning with no known relatives.
