Japan bans under 20s from smoking. Eastern Siberia travelers tote soups frozen solid. Milk is frozen and sold by the pound. In some Siberian skies a daytime rainbow appears from snow particles. Australia has no orphan asylums private families care for destitute orphans until 14 with government pay. Burglars use telephones in New Rochelle to locate empty homes and then break in.
The entire lot of goods damaged in the recent Merrimack Manufacturing fire has been purchased by A G Pollard and Company. A large special sale will be held with full details to be announced in a few days.

Buffalo New York September 24 The Leon Czolgosz murder trial resumes at 10 AM with expectation of completion tonight. witnesses describe the Temple of Music crowd and the shooting as Samuel Fields Louis Babcock Edward Rice testify about the events surrounding President McKinley's shooting and the ensuing struggle.
Washington Sept 24 The Schley court of inquiry met this morning but adjourned after learning Jeremiah Wilson senior counsel for Admiral Schley had died at the Shoreham hotel from acute indigestion complicated by kidney trouble. Sessions were to resume tomorrow and likely adjourn for Judge Wilson's funeral.
Notices posted in Fall River Iron Works mills declare a five percent wage raise. The 3000 operatives at the Matthew Co D Borden owned plant were informed today, a move seen as surprising in cotton manufacturing and likely to pressure other mills to follow suit.
In Philadelphia on September 24 the State and city conventions of the Union party met to fuse with Democrats against the regular Republicans. The fusion saw Unionists nominate Harman Yerkes, a Democratic hopeful for supreme court judge, along with other Democratic candidates.
A morning fire at Lirisk's coal yards spread to the Columbia Hardware company and the Marine Iron company, destroying all three plants and causing about a quarter of a million dollars in losses. Two firefighters were severely injured.
Canton Ohio September 24 The health of Mrs McKinley remains unchanged and encouraging. The weather is warm and she intends to visit the cemetery this morning and later take an extended drive to enjoy the day.
Emma Goldman is released from custody in Chicago by order of Justice Prindeville on September 24. The action ends her detention following a court order issued in the case.
A special committee of Methodist ministers reports that abolishing the army canteen reduces drunkenness at New York Army posts and nationwide. The ministers appointed last spring investigated claims of rising drunkenness and found improvement after reform.
The city committee reported at the Methodist ministers weekly meeting that visits to all forts in the area found the rioting and drunkenness claims at Fort Wadsworth and South Beach Staten Island on July 13 and 14 to be entirely false. The report was approved without dissent.
Chicago, Sept 24 Bow man a wealthy mine owner has pledged $1000000 of mine earnings to the People's church of America to aid its work. Dr Hiram W Thomas founder says more millions may follow and a committee reports sufficiency in Bow mans mines. Thomas, liberal in view, aims to open churches in theatres nationwide and plans a sociology and religion study school.
Washington reports that after multiple talks between President Roosevelt and Gen. Wood the Cuba reciprocity agreement is to be sent to Congress in December. The plan lowers duties on US cereals and machinery while sugar and tobacco remain central Cuban exports.
Boston Globe reports Nathaniel Hawthorne Cusack, a Washington contractor who died August 23, may leave a vast fortune to Boston figures led by niece Miss Mary Cusack of 38 Worcester Street. James Henry McDermott, 431 Shawmut Avenue, receives 250000, while Roosevelt-connected relatives and others receive 150000 to 100000. Executors are Milo B. Stevens and McDermott, with details awaiting will reading at Lowell probate.
Senator Hanna said he was misunderstood for refusing to discuss Roosevelt policy but did not rule out speaking publicly again. He will back McKinley policy if continued and predicts sustained prosperity. He expects Congress to act on anarchism next session, and will campaign with his daughter Ruth in Maine to see the new cruiser Cleveland.
Deputy Assistant District Attorney Garvan has nearly finished preparations for the Devery case to be heard before Justice Jerome on Wednesday. A large number of witnesses have been examined and evidence gathered from those who witnessed the O Neill and Marrinan trials or offered later testimony.
In dense fog yesterday Throgg's Neck saw the steamer Silvana from St Johns Newfoundland with 71 passengers run ashore. A tug later towed her off and she proceeded. No damage reported. Also the Mohegan of the Vermont Central railroad grounded nearby and expected to float at next high tide.
A New York woman who disappeared after saying she wanted a country stay was found safe in Basking Ridge. Captain Titus of the detective bureau reports she went there to visit two girl chums and had no visitors while away.
Albert H. Hanscom of Fremont was held up on the Concord and Portsmouth railroad near Greenland New Hampshire at about 9 PM. Three men demanded money, one fired a shot hitting his shoulder and burning his clothes. He was left with injuries and $42 plus his watch and chain stolen. He was taken to a cottage hospital. Hanscom, 24, served in the 26th U.S. infantry and Cuba and the Philippines. Police alerted in neighboring cities. He may identify one suspect.
Lincoln September 24 Chancellor E Benjamin Andrews of the University of Nebraska corrects a Chicago report claiming he taught lying could be justified in certain cases. He states the report is false and that in his Chicago lecture on veracity he argued lies are never justifiable under any circumstances and for any purpose. He attributes the misreport to a careless reporter who attributed a view he only mentioned to refute.
John W. Gates and his wife arrived from abroad and forgot to declare diamonds bought overseas. Special Treasury agent William A. Theobald flagged the omission on the New York wharf. Gates paid duties totaling 26 923 dollars for items including necklaces and a dresser, then apologized and left.
Milford New Hampshire September 24 A boiler explosion at the new Westerly quarry seriously injures John Bianchi owner of the quarry and Charles Caldwell who may die in the incident authorities report two men were struck by debris and rushed to a local hospital for treatment
The Lowell Bar association met to plan funeral attendance for Hon. Jeremiah Crowley. Judge Hadley chaired, and five members were appointed to draft resolutions to be presented at the superior court. The meeting praised Crowley’s self-made character and civic regard.
The body of ex Mayor Jeremiah Crowley will lie in state at his late home 52 Mt. Washington street today from 1 PM to evening for the public to view their former town leader and friend.
The board of aldermen and the common council will hold a joint meeting tonight to pay tribute to the late ex mayor Crowley. Remarks by the mayor and city officials will precede resolutions or a committee to draft them. A funeral will follow at Mt Washington street and St Patrick's church with city officials in attendance.
The President of the Middlesex County Bar Association has appointed a committee to attend the funeral of Hon. Jeremiah Crowley and others. Vice president Geo F Richardson and Francis W Qua head the delegate list with Charles H Connant of Lowell George L Mayberry of Waltham and Marcellus Coggan of Maiden also named.
The school committee requires a sixth grade certificate for all evening school teacher candidates. Those with prior teaching have certificates. Lowell high school graduates and training school or State normal school students receive certificates without exam. Others are tested in arithmetic English grammar reading spelling and penmanship. the latter accepts slant or vertical writing. The exam is at the high school building Saturday September 28 at 8 o clock.
Division 2 A O H held a special meeting last night and appointed a new official to a leadership post. The report notes the organization’s ongoing activities and internal changes.
New York report says Miss Helen A Bloodgood, the heiress who vanished, was traced to an obscure hotel at Morris County Ridge near Morristown New Jersey. She checked in as Louise Johnston and was located by her mother and Detective Sergeant Funston. She returned to New York last night.

A delegation will attend the funeral of Hon Jeremiah Crowley and a committee will draft suitable resolutions. A floral tribute will be sent from the division. Delegation members are Thomas J. Lynch John E. Lowney Michael W. Spillane and Thomas Kane.
A small gathering in Judge Halley’s police court heard pleas from repeat offenders. Mullane pleaded guilty and his case was continued. Cummings, with 18 prior appearances, was released on a two dollar payment. Pyan paid a six dollar fine. Demers, McWilliams, Flynn and Boudreau paid two dollars each. Neeley pleaded not guilty to larceny and had the case continued to Friday.
About 600 French American Republican voters in the Seventh senatorial district attended a smoke talk in St. Joseph's hall Dutton street last night in support of Charles H Hanson for the Republican Senate nomination. Speakers included Hanson Dr Gagnon BE Vincent Henry J Collins C Dozois D Houde J H Bergeron D B Lebouf L Lanois J S Lapierre Vesina Gauvin Michelin and A J Gagnon with Lapierre master of ceremonies. They praised Hansons qualities and urged unity against a rival candidate. Enthusiasm at the caucus was high and voters pledged united support and individual efforts for Hanson.
The majors have been named as Helen Stearns and Daisy Farrell. Captains include Violet Stocks Blanche Marshall Anna Wilson Minnie Coburn Helen Livingston Susy Cutter Alice Gray Mary Cassidy. First lieutenants list Annette Washburn Annie McKissock Ruth Wilder Lillian Stevens Margaret Harrington Lumina Cantin Annie Robitaille Clara Rosander. Second lieutenants include Christine Kane Blanche Cover Mary Guyton Mary Brown Grace Jennings Edith Maker Lillian Landry Gertrude Sweatt.
At 2 30 this morning two Boston patrolmen spotted a man rifling the cash drawer at John J Hart & Co 770 Washington Street. He fled through a rear window and was arrested. He claimed to be Thomas Brown 17 of Lowell and admitted taking 1 99. He faces charges of breaking and entering and larceny.
The Mt Vernon Free Baptist church unanimously extended a call to Rev Stephen B Millen who has supplied the pulpit since Rev F Allison Currier’s resignation. Millen, born in New Brunswick and raised in Lewiston Maine, is of Scottish descent and has conducted mission work and evangelist duties across New England. He accepted the call and will begin duties next Sunday.
