A miscellany comment on taxes a government surplus and presidential handshakes. mentions open car season and pneumonia cars ending for winter. notes ex desperado James Younger carrying bullets, a carte blanche pass for Rev Peter MacQueen from the Czar to travel Siberian railroad. remarks on reform figures and unsteady support.
The primary and intermediate department children, about a hundred, rode a special car from Dufton street at 1 45 pm to Mountain Rock for an afternoon outing. A lunch for 150, including many parents, was served at 4 pm. Games were played, football enjoyed, and the group sang homeward. Dolly Gray and Mr. Kenngett were thanked as they left, with refreshments run by the Maternal association led by Mrs. Geo. E. Ames and others.

Leon F. Czolgosz was arraigned in Erie county supreme court in Buffalo on murder charges for the Sept. 6 shooting of President McKinley. He refused to talk with his lawyers as Judge Lewis ruled his guilty plea invalid and entered not guilty. Jurors were sworn and more called as the session opened with guards dispersed the crowd. Witnesses including James C. Milburn and other officials attended as the trial began.
The Schley court of inquiry opened at 11 o clock in Washington today with witnesses on hand including Admiral C S Cotton Commanders James Maddison Miller A Bates and S C Heilner Captains B H McCalla and William C Wise and Lieuts John Hood and Spencer Wood.
A large portion of Bergen in northern Norway burned last night in a fierce city fire. Two firemen were killed, and losses reach several million kroner, with emergency crews battling late into the night to contain the blaze.
A. Charles Marisa, arrested in Bridgeport for counterfeiting, was brought to New Haven by U.S. Marshal Bowen. Officers found a large counterfeiting operation at 90 Hamilton Street with coins, molds, drills, and a vat. Marisa said his wife, calling herself Mrs Bessie Marisa, aided him. he claimed they came from Fall River three weeks ago.
United States Commissioner Wright presided at the custom house where two defendants were held on bail of 2500. In default they were sent to the county jail and their cases were continued for one week. Mari sa asserts he did not spend any of the new money in this city.
Mayor Dimon orders half mast for Jeremiah Crowley and convenes a special common council session for tomorrow night to act on memorial and public business. Registrars add 114 names to voting lists with 60 on Saturday and 54 more on Saturday evening. Sessions planned Monday Sept 30 and also Thu Fri Sat of that week. Sewer dept employs 150 to 200 on Meadowcroft School and Cedar street sewers amid clay bottom in School street. Streets and Sewers committees to meet tonight.
Lowell merchants seek a man posing as L. L. Myers of 47 State street Lynn who took orders for stencil stamps with 50 cent deposits and promised a $1.50 stamp. No such resident exists in Lynn. Police alerted. the scam involved advance money for a $2 product.
The local branch of the Boston and Northern railroad shows a shakeup of about eight workers from 200 to 300 employees. The transfers create promotions for those who performed merit in the direct line as new cars were added to connect with the Woburn line.
A Woburn car collided with a Tewksbury vehicle at the end of the Tewksbury line in the Centre about 8 AM. The Tewksbury car was stopped for passenger transfers. the Woburn car failed to brake. The only damage reported was a broken fender.

In Lowell on Monday Judge Hadley paid tribute to ex Mayor Crowley who died Sunday night. The short session heard multiple drunkenness cases with sentences ranging from fines to jail and probation. Susan Moss, formerly Stack, was granted leniency after a story of travel to Boston. Several defendants received probation or jail terms, including Catharine McNulty and Jeremiah Twomey.
An informal reception will be tendered Miss Pierson general secretary of the YWCA at the association rooms Tuesday evening. Friends of Miss Pierson and of the association are invited to be present.
Jeremiah Crowley longtime Lowell Democrat and former mayor died at his home 52 Mt Washington street after a four to five year battle with Brights disease His career spanned law politics and civic service including terms as alderman and two mayoral terms He was born January 12 1882 and leaves a wife an adopted son Robert J Crowley and nephew James T O Hearn The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 30 from his residence and a 10 o clock mass at St Patrick's Church
The Kitson Machine company laid off 48 machinists at Saturday noon due to lack of orders with vague prospects for re-engagement. Most affected had short employment tenures, while the firm plans no immediate large-scale further workforce changes. Since 1897 business has topped prior four-year totals. An order rush recently prompted substantial bonuses for extra machines, with monthly dividends near weekly wages for many workers.
At the police station Mrs. D Goddard of Mammoth road reported a lost pocketbook containing from 75 to 100 dollars. The loss occurred on a Lawrence car. A box of biscuits found on the street awaits an owner at the police station.
