Boston dispatch reports Medical Examiner Steadman ruled John Kane of Brighton died from gas poisoning and alcoholism after a troubling death in bed. Mrs Kane, held for inquiry, was released.
Guthrie Oklahoma September 24 Deputies and marshals chased suspects after an attempted holdup on a south bound Santa Fe train near Edmond. The outlaws fled and were pursued but details remain unclear.
Eastport Maine Sept 24 The sardine packers of Eastport Lubec and adjoining territory have decided to implement Oct 1 an advance in sardine prices due to the scarcity of herring. They cite tighter supplies and seek to protect profits in the seasonal market.
A Rome dispatch reports a disastrous earthslide at a sulphur mine near Girgenti, Italy, causing the deaths of forty workers and injuring many more. The accident prompted rescue efforts and inquiries into mine safety.
Paris dispatch reports Figaro warning the French government that Germany weighs whether Europe should permit the United States to force Spain from Cuba. The notice highlights rising international tension amid Cuban affairs and U S involvement.
In Biloxi Mississippi on September 24 the yellow fever situation shows clear improvement. Officials report cases have not spread and the arrival of cooler weather is aiding the decline in fever activity.
In a weather hindered match between Pelham Warner's England XI and a Baltimoreans side at Catonsville Country Club, the first innings saw Baltimore 66 for seven. England 147 and 252 for eight. Heavy rain caused a draw as darkness fell with Baltimore 252 for eight and England needing one more inning. Bull and Head starred for England. Sleeman led Baltimore's earlier batting and fielding. Attendance was light and the visitors departed for Philadelphia tonight.

Frank Sargent leads George A. in the 2.22 trot and dominates the pace with Dan Wilkes Maud H. and Oxford chasing. Tack Hill wins the third heat in pools after Jack took the first two. Darkness postpones the race. the 2.28 class remains unfinished.
James Frasier, 38, was stabbed at 356 Anawan Street by Thomas Butler alias Budlong, a 55 year old Grand Army veteran. Butler, in custody, admits the act claiming a knife was the weapon though a bayonet was reported by a witness. Frasier sustained two deep wounds and was taken to the city hospital in critical condition.
Baltimore on September 24 Josiah C Stevens wounded his son Robert J Stevens 23 in a dispute over his planned marriage. After the son slapped his sister the father drew a revolver and shot him in the back then turned the gun on himself but was stopped by two daughters. Robert Stevens was taken to Maryland University Hospital in critical condition.
New York reports Dr. Nansen will sail from Southampton on October 16 aboard the St. Paul. His first American lecture is scheduled for October 28 in New York. The Nansen exhibit from Stockholm sails October 5, with the Christiania collection leaving Stockholm by the Amerika and to be shown free in New York.
The executive council met and Acting Governor Crane named Amos K. Tilden to the Board of Registration in Pharmacy. Austin C. Peters of Boston and Charles A. Dennen of Pennerell were named cattle commissioners. James Renfrew of Adams becomes Fitchburg railroad director and Dr G. G. Bailey of Ipswich medical examiner for the 2d Essex district, vice Cleves, resigned. All but Bailey were reappointments.
San Francisco Sept 24 Attorney Henry C McPike Mrs Langtrys lawyer verifies report she will marry Prince Esterhazy. the revelation anchors a rumored union involving a prominent social figure and a foreign royal title.
Four young men left Bucksport Maine Tuesday morning in a small boat for a lumber landing three miles up the Penobscot. They have not been heard from. A water logged boat a man’s hat and a wooden bucket with provisions were found. Officials believe they were drowned. Clarence McCarthy 38 of 1017 Columbus Ave Boston died from a skull fracture after a fall at Tremont Street building No 1327. He died in the City Hospital. Niagara Falls opens a three day celebration for the completion of the new steel arch bridge with a 150 piece band from four major military bands in the United States and Canada.
Robert J. Hibbert faced trial at May's Landing New Jersey for attempted murder of Mrs. Phoebe Phillips in Atlantic City last summer. After evidence finished the pair surprised by announcing plans to wed. A clergyman united Hibbert and Phillips despite her prior testimony of an arranged marriage.
Rochester New Hampshire September 23 Governor Ramsdell and his council attended a busy Rochester fair. Distinguished guests were present as local civic and business leaders greeted the visitors during the day long events.
Peter Martin, a young tough, faced four charges after a violent incident at 197 Appleton street. He was found guilty of drunkenness and sentenced to six months in the workhouse. Larceny, breaking and entering, and assault carry various bonds and future hearings in Superior court. Police records note prior prowling on Stackpole street and a mug shot ordered for the rogues gallery.
A large Ladies' Auxiliary to the Veteran Firemen association met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. C. H. Philbrick's residence at 620 School Street. Mrs. Samuel Silsby and Mrs. F. C. Austin were named to plan a whist party. Supper followed and the Vets stayed for a social hour.
The Ladies Benevolent Society of the First Trinitarian church held its first full social last night in Mechanics Hall. It was a fruit sociable with a wide variety of fruit served until 8 o clock. No formal program, but many youths present played games.
Word reached Woburn Thursday that Hugh Foley, a former city resident, was killed the same day in Littleton by passing trains. Foley had lived in Littleton for years and was employed by the Fitchburg railroad.
The London Times reports thirteen thousand present as Dr Nansen spoke on his Arctic expedition. The crowd echoed enthusiasm for the Fram and praised the explorer's simple words and courage. The Prince of Wales received with cheers and presented the Royal Geographical Society gold medal to Nansen.
An Italian quarry worker named Manuelle fell into a stone crusher while oiling a machine at North Cohas quarry and was torn to pieces. The incident occurred Thursday, leaving the site in shock.

The Superior court finished the Boyle versus City of Lowell case this morning and the matter went to a jury. The suit seeks damages for land taken to raise the Pawtucket street crossing grade, with plaintiff seeking at least 5000 and the city estimating around 8000. Evidence notes more housing nearby in seven years, while the land remained low and river-invaded.
Frederick Lawton’s friends announce he will run for the Republican mayoral nomination, with his name to be presented at municipal caucuses. They promise a friendly campaign aimed at giving voters a clear choice, and expect a ratification by a triumphant election. Inspector Donaldson traveled to Manchester New Hampshire yesterday for George Perusse a Lowell man accused of stealing a watch and chain from a South Lowell girl. He allegedly traded the jewelry for a ring and then rode a wheel to Manchester offering to dispose of it for five dollars, arousing Inspector Dowd who arrested him. A Lowell police warrant already exists for his arrest.
Inspector Laflamme tracked Joseph Demont, formerly of Lowell, to Amesbury yesterday. Demont is alleged to have bought fur niture on the instalment plan in this city and sold part of it after moving to Amesbury.
Next Sunday the Mt Vernon Free Baptist Church observes Rally Day with an excellent program. The Ladies Lyceum Orchestra will perform and a ladies quartet will sing. The day ends with a children's concert in the evening. Seats are free.
The Ladies Benevolent Society of the First Congregational church in Lowell cemetery placed a neat substantial granite marker bearing the inscription First Congregational Church. Bowden & Colmer did creditable work and the society is commended for this improvement.
Fall opening of gentlemen's neckwear showcases a rich selection of ventlemen's silk and satin ties in bright colors and artistic shapes. The display in the Furnishing Goods window aims to attract Lowell customers with new, high quality designs and a promise to make a customer of any viewer.
A French Democratic club was organized in the Associate building on Wednesday evening with about 75 attendees. The group adopted the Canada American Club name and elected officers led by President Philipe Demarais and a slate including Dr. A. J. Gagnon, Peter Bourgeois, C. R. Daoust, J. E. Lambert, Arthur Grimard, and Noe Chaput as janitor.
Registration figures by ward show 33 total, down one from the prior record. A young Frenchee addressed a meeting at ward Seven engine house where a committee of 15 was appointed to oversee registrations.
The funeral for Ira Leonard was held at his home on Me Thuen Street at 2 pm. L. K. Washburn of Boston gave the address, praising Leonard’s independent thinking and integrity. The service included Bryant’s The Old Man’s Funeral, a solo by Mr and Mrs Burns, and concluded with We Shall Meet on that Beautiful Shore before burial in Lowell cemetery.
Capt. Charles W. Hanson formerly of this city died in Brooklyn N Y on September 18 from peritonitis. He left Lowell to settle in Brooklyn in 1882 and served many years as clerk of the state aid department here. He was active in musical circles and sang in prominent church choirs. Burial took place in Peabody Massachusetts.
City hall lighting improvements underway while the Pawtucket crossing fence finishes. The dispensary averages 20 prescriptions daily. Purchasing department projects $200,000 in year end supplies. six month total $100,000. School enrollment stands at 756 high and 4871 grammar pupils. Three primary and three kindergarten returns are pending for week one.

In New York names listed from Bartholdi Co. to G. S. Gilman and C. M. Young appear in social notes.
Miss May R. Knapp married George B. Hurd on September 22 at the clergyman's residence with Rev. F. K. Stratton officiating. The couple resides in the city and begins their married life together.
Holmes 78 died at Lowell almshouse September 24. James A Goodwin 15 died at St John’s hospital September 23. Louise Teague four months thirteen days died September 2 at 405 Broadway. James Roach longtime resident died September 23 at 198 Worthen Street.
