James Kelley, 29, of Lewisboro New York, fatally shot Charles Meade 50, at Meade’s home in Lewisboro last night. Kelley used a 32 calibre revolver after eloping three weeks earlier with Meade’s daughter aged 18. The quarrel ended with Meade’s instant death. Kelley was arrested.
The President, Mrs. McKinley and the entire party awoke refreshed after a good night’s sleep and spent the forenoon quietly around Hon. W. B. Plunkett’s residence in Adams Berkshire. The morning weather was cloudy with light showers.
Clinton September 23. Edward Leach a 25 year old man lighted a fire to warm beside a shanty on the Boston and Maine road two miles from Clinton this morning. He entered the cabin to sleep and the shanty caught fire. Leach was probably fatally burned.
John Kane, 30, of Brighton, was found dead in bed with the gas on. Blood was found on his clothing after a quarrel with his wife last night. Mrs Kane was arrested pending investigation.
Boston dispatch reports George Atwood convicted of robbing mail boxes and forgeries received a five year state prison sentence in the U S court today.
Reports from Japan indicate the steamer City of China, flying the Hawaiian flag, might be seized to satisfy the Mikado’s claim against Hawaii. San Francisco dispatches dated September 23 state the action could involve the Hawaiian vessel in compensation negotiations.
A morning blaze at Mystic wharf damaged Boston and Maine railroad coal diggers with losses of 15000 dollars. The Bath Maine schooner William B. Palmer also suffered sail damage and an estimated 3000 dollars in losses.

The funeral of Rosa A Rourke was held at 9 o clock this morning from St Patrick s Church with Rev Fr Leonard officiating. Requiem mass was sung by Schmidt s. Offertory solo Ingemisco Libera were performed by Miss Finn and Mr J F Faulkner. De Profundis was sung as cortege left the church burial followed at St Patrick s cemetery under Undertaker Peter Davey. Floral tributes included pillows and sprays from family the Matthew Temperance Institute Mrs James Gaffeny and others.
About 26 members of the Board of Trade left this morning for the White Mountains on an excursion arranged by Secretary James T. Smith. The itinerary lists departures from Middle Street Depot at 8 30 a.m. Thursday via Lawrence and North Conway to Crawford House for dinner on the train. Friday 8 38 a.m. from Crawford’s to Summit of Mt. Washington, Fabian's at 3 33 p.m., Jefferson at 4 25 p.m., Saturday 12 45 p.m. from Jefferson with supper at Plymouth, returning home by 7 48 p.m.
The Thistle lodge visited Melrose Highlands in large numbers on Wednesday night. A cordial reception followed a fine programme with an address by Chief Templar Kierstead, a song by Miss Margaret Dobson, remarks by M. Leland Stacy, and a piano solo by Miss Hannah Taylor. Refreshments were served and the social and literary time was enjoyed.

Reports show 1496 societies in state union, with 939 young, 483 junior, seven intermediate, five mothers. Donations totaled 15,475 for missions, temperance work active in 177 societies, 28 new committees. Sunday school committees number 268. Treasurer’s report cited year receipts of 1001.02 and a balance of 475 on Oct 1, 1896. expenditures matched receipts. Afternoon and evening programs featured multiple ministers and speakers from Lynn, Salem, Cambridge, Malden, Newton, Boston, Newburyport, Rochester, and more.

The engagement of Miss Mona Mae Manning of Nashua to Frank H Leonard, a popular electrician of this city, is made public. Mr Leonard belongs to Ancient York lodge. A Grace Carll of Lowell sang at a Mendelssohn society entertainment in Goffstown New Hampshire Monday, also reading and dancing well. Readings by Mrs Harriman of saa city.
Miss Laura Sproul and Anthony C. Jewett were wed in the city on September 22 at 1158 Lakeview avenue, by Reverend L. C. Manchester, in a quiet domestic ceremony.
