The President, Mrs. McKinley and the entire party rested well after a night of sleep. They spent the forenoon quietly around the residence of Hon. W. B. Plunkett. Weather was cloudy with occasional light rain.
Clinton report states Edward Leach aged 25 lighted a fire beside a shanty on the Boston and Maine road two miles from Clinton to warm himself. He entered the cabin to sleep and the shanty caught fire, Leach sustaining probable fatal burns.
Boston dispatch reports John Kane aged 30 of Brighton found dead in bed with gas turned on. Bloodstains on clothing. He and his wife quarreled last night and Mrs Kane was arrested pending investigation.
Boston news report states George Atwood was convicted of robbing mail boxes and forgeries and sentenced to five years in a state prison by the United States court on September 23.
San Francisco dispatches from September report advices that the steamer City of China, sailing under the Hawaiian flag, may be seized to satisfy Japan's claim against Hawaii.
A morning fire on Mystic wharf damaged Boston and Maine railroad coal diggers, with losses estimated at 15000 dollars. The Bath Maine schooner William B. Palmer also suffered sail loss and about 3000 dollars in damage.
In Rockland on September 23 workers at Rice & Hutchins's factory stitching and sole fastening departments and the E. T. Wright factory fasteners walked out for a uniform pay scale.
Taunton Sept 23 Bernard C Rudden 65 was choked to death this morning by a piece of meat stuck in his throat. He leaves a family.

Halifax Sept 22 Mr Dickinson continued his address on the Cooper claim pressed by Sir Charles H Tupper valued at 235000 He argued Cooper as a domiciled US citizen holds same footing as a natural born US citizen and that US sovereignty extends over vessels owned by US natural born citizens He cited Kosseta and Lord Colburn to discuss domicile and civil status and said domicile disputes spurred the commission formation
Company C of Salem led the Boxford rifle shoot with 385 points while Company A scored 344, Company B 333, and Company D 260 under Lieut Worthen. Weather hindered performance and Company D fielded nine men instead of ten.

The councilman Butler Ames won ward nine caucus with 258 to 141 over J H Shepard and will seek nomination for the Legislature in the 27th district. In ward three the bid to renominate Rep Richard Dobbins of the 26th district failed as his opponent was easily beaten.
Clarence W. Dana was named chairman at 7 30 in Jackson hall and Edward T. Goward elected secretary. About 26 members of the Board of Trade departed this morning for a White Mountains excursion arranged by Secretary James T. Smith. The trip starts at 8 30 a m from Middle Sex Street Depot, travels via Lawrence and North Conway, and reaches Crawford House by 3 20 p m for dinner.
Thistle lodge of Good Templars visited Melrose Highlands lodge in large numbers Wednesday night. The twelfth annual state convention of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor of Massachusetts opened at First M E church in Lynn with about 1000 delegates and expect up to 5000. Secretary Alphia G Hillson reported 1496 societies statewide, with $15 475 contributed to missions and temperance work. Treasurer Charles H Wells cited receipts of $1001.02 for the year. Afternoon and evening sessions featured multiple ministers discussing prayer worship and the society's role, with speakers including Tillman B Johnson DeWitt S Clarke and C P Mills among others.
Police Court in Hadley held eight drunken defendants this morning. Three were fined one dollar each, three fined three dollars each, and two fined five dollars each.
