Joseph Frederick Simonds a longtime Lexington figure and former town official died at his home at noon Friday. Born October 26 1810 he lived near his birthplace all his life. He served 35 years as chairman of the board of assessors and held posts as selectman overseer surveyor and more. He married Susan Millikin in 1835 and had three sons and five daughters. His third daughter married former Massachusetts Governor George D. Robinson. His son Joseph died in 1862 from wounds at Malvern Hill Virginia. Mrs Robinson and three children were with him at death. He was a kindly man valued as a local authority on town history.
Edward Prentiss of 7 Hampshire place Lowell claimed he was robbed of $3000 in a Porter street entryway. A pair of young colored women allegedly embraced him and took $700. one suspect was arrested and the money partially recovered. Police chase the second suspect toward New York.
A skeleton discovered by Lowell hunters Saturday in Dracut near North Boston road was identified as John Johnson a 32 year old Swedish stonecutter formerly of Concord New Hampshire. The body showed a bullet hole in the skull suggesting self inflicted death. Johnson had recently been in poor health and out of work. He left Concord after giving a gold watch to a fiancée and leaving other effects to a sailor brother. Remains were buried at Edson cemetery after medical examiners report.
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Lowell Reform Club hosted a successful trolley party Saturday night. Three cars departed the square at 7, 7:15 and 7:30 PM, arriving at Belle Grove for an entertainment and pavilion dancing. Over 200 tickets were sold in advance, ensuring a solid financial boost for the club. Pinkham died Sunday September 19 at 4 a m at his residence 84 A street born in 1822 at Moultonborough New Hampshire childhood in Dover New Hampshire came to Lowell in 1839 joined Lowell Manufacturing company as apprentice and mechanic over thirty years later with Appleton and Hamilton company health declined recently active in First Baptist church chorister for thirty years prominent in musical circles member of the Common Council in 1866 survived by widow one grandchild and a sister in Dover New Hampshire Also Mary Ann Greenhalge wife of John Greenhalge died at her Lawrence street home aged about 35 leaves four children her mother Mrs Margaret Delaney a brother John J Delaney and a sister Mrs Kate Pickering with condolences from a large circle of friends.
