The Handel and Hadyn society in Boston held a special meeting to address the June resignations of principal officers after ousting B. J. Lang and inviting Carl Zerrahn to lead the chorus. After debate the body voted to ask the officials to withdraw their resignations, while ex-president A. Parker Browne offered resolutions calling for the board’s immediate resignation. the resolutions failed by one vote.
A large faction from Lang left their seats during the meeting causing the session to adjourn without further action. The disruption ended any immediate business and left the chamber in silence.
Hanover Sept 17 Dartmouth reports a record freshman class of 185 and total college attendance around 700. A new Charles W. Wilder Laboratory will be built this fall costing 50000 with 20000 allocated for care. Foundation contract set by Oct 10 on the hill between Richardson dormitory and the Medical College. An observatory project funding is planned later, Moore Hall will be extended this fall to 40 by 60 feet, consolidating mathematical departments and adding drawing spaces.
Boston voters held strong caucuses in wards 2 3 6 14 and 19 with large attendance and a scuffle in ward 19. James Curley allegedly struck warden candidate Daniel H Sughrue and was escorted away by police. John H Sullivan secured the councillor nomination by a large margin. Henry F Naphen won only in South Boston wards and ward.
Several deaths reported in Lowell and surrounding towns. Infant Joseph Murphy died at eight months at No 3 Lowell place. John C Henry aged 67 died at 34 Mead street leaving a wife and two daughters. Julia A Tewksbury aged 63 died at Lowell General Hospital and will be interred in Warner New Hampshire. Lewis Cumnock died after bowel inflammation, from a notable textile family with ties to Easthampton Manchester and Woonsocket. Mary J Fallon died at 852 Central street aged 36, survived by John B and James Swift and sisters Margaret Rose and Mrs Mower. funeral arrangements to follow.

From Lowell Massachusetts Mrs H M Copurn reports a swelling under her tongue that physicians called a semi transparent tumor. She began Hood's Sarsaparilla in spring and the lump gradually faded with no return. She praises Hood's Sarsaparilla and hood's pills for sick headache.
Robert J. blasted the track to set a 2.13 half mile mark, beating the previous by seven seconds as thousands watched the Middlesex North Agricultural Society opening day, with John R. Gentry clocking 2.18 and Napoleon winning the 2,560 class heat.
This morning’s brief session of the police court tried Nellie Cassidy among four drunks and postponed other docket items. Nellie Cassidy received six months in the workhouse. James Delorme was found guilty of vagrancy and sentenced to six months in the workhouse, with $200 bond on appeal. Martin Richards and Mary Duffy were convicted of fornication and each jailed for three months. John Kyrece was fined $10 for larceny or 30 days in jail.
