Transvaal government now approves the second option and invites Britain to set the constitution and meeting place for the proposed commission.
Manila reports via Hong Kong that 36 percent of officers and 25 percent of enlisted men in MacArthur's division are sick. Included are those in quarters and sent home. Eleven percent of enlisted men in quarters suffer from dysentery and malarial fevers.
Five hundred rebels with one cannon attacked Santa Rita Panay this morning, alongside attacks on Guagua and San Antonio by about sixty rebels. All due to repulse with no American casualties. Col. Bell and his regiment captured a rebel captain, lieutenant and six privates. Inhabitants of Santa Baroaram flee the town fearing bombardment by the Oregon. Fall goods ready. The Primary Teachers' union held its first meeting of the season at the Paige Street church. Preparations were made for an institute in late November after the State convention. Mrs. E. A. Stevens taught the lesson for next Sunday with remarks by Mrs. Upton and a blackboard lesson by Miss Hardy. Rev. Geo. L. Clark of Farmington Conn will preach in the morning and communion is at 7 p.m. with the subject A Long View of Life.
Three drunks faced the court this morning. William Moran and James Smith paid fines of six dollars each for misdemeanors, while William Dever, a long-time offender, received a term at the State farm. Kos tas Micholoputos was tried for larceny of a valise from traveling salesman Fred P Crawford. After Crawford located the valise at Nicholoputos’s shop and produced the goods, the court found Micholoputos not guilty and discharged him. Charles Mitchell, charged by Mrs. Charles Larna with stealing her watch, was dismissed when Larna did not appear. Mitchell claimed he borrowed the timepiece and returned it.
Cornelius Rourke of West Sixth street was struck by a United States mail wagon on Middlesex street this morning. He was knocked down and severely bruised. An ambulance conveyed him home where doctors found a broken rib and feared internal injuries.
A lawn party on church grounds Friday evening featured the Highland orchestra and cornet solos by Miss Gertrude Pratt with Miss Eva Pratt as accompanist. Dr Cleon L Webster arrested Thursday on a forgery charge is now in a hospital in poor health from overwork. He had a large practice and was regarded as a good physician. His father, a Nashua retiree, was with Judge Parker when they came to Lowell. The case will probably be settled.
A meeting of the Republican committee of the 27th district met at George W Poore's office. Hon. Frank W. Howe of Lowell was chosen chairman and Sidney A. Bull of Billerica was named secretary. A sub-committee including Poore Billings and Bull was tasked with fixing the convention time and place.
Bridget Garrity aged 85 died at home on Read Street last night. Robert Entwistle infant son of Harry and Maria Entwistle died at their High Street home and was buried at Edson Cemetery Friday afternoon.
