Judge Lilley presides at the opening session in Lowell Civil Court. Rev. L. C. Manchester delivers the customary prayer as jurors are qualified. With no case ready for trial, the court adjourns to Tuesday. a lengthy trial list includes Gage v City of Lowell and numerous other civil actions involving Lowell firms, mills, and utilities.
Officials of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit company say wholesale discharges have ended a pattern of theft by hundreds of conductors. The firm estimates nearly $50,000 was stolen by new conductors in the six weeks since the July strike.
A benefit lawn party at Pliny F Brett’s North Billerica home featured tents, refreshments, and races from fat man to boys. Prizes included a vase, watermelon, china plate, and bicycle. Evening concerts, sang duets, and piano solos followed. An automobile collision near the Navy Yard injured Mrs Coburn. she recovered, while her husband escaped unharmed. A new Shamrock Athletic club forms with 20 members, naming Florence Murray as president and a basketball team planned.
The Club de Citoyens Americains hosts a whist party in Prescott hall Runels building tomorrow evening. It is expected to be one of the most successful events yet. After the whist, Gen Curtis Guild Jr and others will speak. Committee includes T Roch president Joseph A Legare secretary G Lambert treasurer Alfred Clement Joseph Provost Octave Carrignon Telephore Malo.
Mr A G Pollard offers a new church organ dependent on conditions that will be met, aiding the remodeling of the First Baptist Church. Plans call for spring start with increased seating to about 1500, better exits, choir facilities, and a circular tower. Fundraising includes chair purchases by members, a $1000 pledge from the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, and weekly installments. the project aims to raise around $12,000 with broader community support.
The treasurer will be at the club rooms to receive annual fees and issue membership tickets on Tuesday and Friday afternoons this week from 3 to 5 o'clock. Fees must be paid before October 1, 1899 or membership will be forfeited. The first club meeting is set for Monday, October 2, 1899 and season announcements will follow.
Public and private schools begin a new year with increased numbers. The high school reports 822 students, with an expected rise of at least 20 in two weeks. Principal Cyrus W. St Michael's parish teachers welcomed a large crowd of pupils at 8 o'clock mass. Rev Fr Boland celebrated. After service, children marched to nearby school where 352 were accommodated and four grade changes announced. Studies resume with increased music instruction from a new violin banjo mandolin guitar teacher.
Immaculate Conception school enrolled 580 pupils this year, a material gain over last year, with all accommodated. Mass was celebrated in the Immaculate Conception church by Rev Fr Law.

John Gleason charged with assault and drunkenness was fined 21 dollars and placed under peace bonds. A dozen Chinese players were fined 5 dollars each. John Powers charged with illegal keeping was continued until Saturday.

President Charles J. Glidden of the Erie Telephone and President John S. Sabin of Pacific coast lines aboard the Lucania on September 23 bound for Liverpool. They will visit Sweden and Germany to study rapid telephone development and plan adoption of valuable features in the United States.
