Sixty nine weavers at Appleton mills returned to work this morning after a Thursday afternoon strike over price per cut on certain grades. The superintendent says the dispute is settled to the satisfaction of both sides. Some strikers are union members and a special meeting was planned. Most strikers are Portuguese who left the union, believing they could strike or quit at will.
Daniel D. Fox and a boy escaped injury when a milk wagon team ran away on Thirteenth Street near Bridge. The wagon struck a post, throwing Fox and the boy from the rig. Fox was badly cut. most of the milk was spilled and a nearby letter box was broken.

On Sept 6 in Pittsburg the Demmler Tin Plate Works at McKeesport resumed with six mills open and 100 men hired, no disorder. Five hundred workers joined the National Tube Co mill bringing the plant to about 1000 employed. Twenty more returned to the Pennsylvania Tube works as an advisory board of Amalgamated moves to Pittburg to weigh a U S Steel ultimatum and possible settlement plan.
In Providence on September 6 an attempted poisoning of Stephen H. Potter’s Greene family was detected after bitter tasting well water turned black when boiled. Mrs. Potter and a daughter fell ill. a chemist confirmed arsenic contamination. A $2300 reward is offered by the town council as police investigate.
Larkin Herron a pitcher for the Arkansas City Grays collapsed and died in the eighth inning of a game with the Joplin team. He had chased a steal to third base in the seventh, then pitched three balls before collapsing. Authorities think a ruptured blood vessel caused his death. Herron was from Oxford, Kansas.
Major Scobell’s forces captured Lotter’s entire commando south of Petersburg. One hundred three prisoners taken, 12 Boers killed, 46 wounded. Two hundred horses seized. Commandants Lotter and Breedt, Field Cornet Kruger, and Lieut. Shoeman among prisoners. British casualties: 10 killed, eight wounded. Among the dead were two Northwest rebels.
President McKinley and about one hundred companions with a military escort traveled to Niagara Falls today. He held a reception at the Temple of Music on the Pan American grounds at 4 o clock and later attended a second reception in honor at George L Williams residence at seven this evening.

Canal Dover Ohio September 6 General Manager Cline of the American Sheet Steel Co was attacked by strikers this morning and carried away in a carriage unconscious Two sheet mills are operating today amid the disturbance and tension at the plant location
A fire in the Merrimack corporation finishing room near Market and Dutton streets was controlled quickly after an alarm from box seven just after 9 PM. Fire originated likely from an electric wire in the packing and finishing area, spread up an elevator shaft, and caused ceiling and roof damage. Officials will assess loss. mill operations resumed by afternoon.
Boston news reports the Massachusetts I O O F annual session electing grand officers for the coming year and approving a 60 room expansion of the Worcester Odd Fellows Home. A costly jewel honoring Past Grand Sire Pinkerton was presented by 13434 donors and framed for Baltimore.

Secretary Courtney of the poor department received a letter from Charles A. Kimball of Littleton reporting an unknown man found near the Boston & Maine tracks at North Littleton last Friday. He appears to have been struck by a train, about 40, with one arm missing and a tattooed shield and flag design on the other arm, and the word True. He wore plain clothes, carried 15 cents and a cake of soap, and no identification could be located in Littleton or other examined areas.
Constantinople reports the Porte aims to reach a direct understanding with French claimants against the Ottoman government. The move is intended to deprive the French government of grounds for action as tensions with France loom.

The Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld a Lowell verdict taxing Erie Telephone directors stocks held in trust for the corporation. The decision sustains the city of Lowell against claims the property lay outside Lowell. It also confirms the constitutional validity of assessors taking action when no sworn tax list is filed, and that the suit to recover about $2,576 from 1889 was timely.
The Lowell city union label ordinance requiring city printing to bear the Typographical union imprint was declared invalid by the supreme court. A test case by Charles R. Goddard et al. blocked payment to Courier-Citizen for board of health printing under the label rule, as it conflicts with the city charter guarding contract sourcing for supplies.

In a city court, Eleanor Burke faced a four month jail term later reduced to a city farm sentence after jail medical care issues. Patrick Ledwidge paid a six dollar fine for drunkenness while Frank Carter received four months for indecent actions. Three Greek youths faced terms for theft and vagrancy linked to the colony. A boy, Richard Mylor, faced abstinence from cigarettes with probation granted. Other cases involved fines for drunkenness and neglect of children as a post meeting noted.
