A morning storm from box 23 at 9.25 alerted the department to a fire at four dwellings on Lakeview Avenue near Co burn Street owned by Mer rimack Manufacturing. Worcester October 26 The closing day of the Unitarian institute featured Rev. George Batchelor on The Relation of Church and State in a Republic and Rev. Dr Horatio Stebbins. Devotional service by Rev. Dr Wm M Brundage. Officers elected include President Rev W W Fenn Rev Frank L Phalen secretary treasurer and directors Rev Samuel B Stewart Edward Everett Hale Paul Revere Frothingham Edward Cummings Merle 8 Croix Wright. A memory service for Dean C C Everett Harvard Divinity School was held and Jacob C Riis gave the final address The Battle With the Slums.
John Harland, the Vesper Country Club pro, lost to Open champion Harry Vardon on Tyngs Island links. The match was close in morning and afternoon, with Vardon finishing 6 up and 5 to play. Harland praised for combat, notably on long game. Vardon praised as best all around. About 400 spectators, lively gallery, and talks of a rematch.

Edward Donohoe, an elderly man, faced Judge Hadley in police court for buying property from downtown merchants under false pretenses and selling it to pawnbrokers. Sixteen witnesses testified as Donohoe claimed ignorance, with the court planning a continuation and a sanity medical exam by Dr. Benner. Several store clerks and pawnbrokers identified items and aliases used by Donohoe, while others testified to purchases under false names. the case was continued and Donohoe taken to the city farm for detention.
Mary A. R. Heroux and her daughter faced trial on charges of taking eighty five dollars from grocer G Beaudry. The case was adjourned at 12 45 until 2 o'clock with the daughter alleged to have stolen the money and handed it to her mother.

George W. Fifield and Hon. John J. Pickman, who will preside at the Nov 5 Republican rally with Senator Hoar and Congressman Knox.
