The Ohio campaign is halted as a tribute to John Sherman with his funeral at Mansfield this afternoon. All meetings are canceled, state offices and the capitol are closed, and officials attend the funeral.
Shamokin Pennsylvania October 25. Fifty armed deputies shovel buckwheat coal from Cameron colliery bank into separators while twenty coal iron policemen patrol the grounds to keep strikers at a distance. The strikers cursed the deputies but offered no violence.
In Norwalk Connecticut on October 23 a man identified as Walter B. Hoyt of New York was found in the harbor at Portland Maine. Tests show the man is not Hoyt and he had read reports of his own death.
The Kentucky sailed this morning to test her guns and, barring trouble, will proceed on the voyage to the Asiatic Station, as reported from New York on October 25.
London date line reports Lord Roberts to depart for home with Wolseley to remain commander in chief until November. The war office confirms Roberts will leave Britain, while Wolseley continues supreme command through the interim.
John Sollensen 21, a Sandy Hook resident and ordnance department clerk, was shot dead by a sentry on the misty Sandy Hook beach near Fort Hancock after failing to halt despite multiple warnings. An official War Department inquiry will follow the fort's commander report.
Two men died after a scaffolding collapse at 86 feet in Roxbury. Daniel Morris, 45, of 725 Parker Street, was killed instantly. William Dillon, 40, died at City Hospital from internal injuries after the fall while working on an old building at 128 and 130 St. Alphonsus street for Nicholas Enwright.
In Bangor Maine October 25 Harry C Hilliker of Lowell is shown in a hospital after being wounded by a companion in the woods Sunday. He survived an operation better than expected. A slight improvement in his condition occurred yesterday though wounds are severe and survival is a professional surprise.
Fire in Nashua destroys a three story wooden block on Canal street owned by Abram Servall. Basement saloon run by John Burrey and street floor druggist Edward S Everett suffer losses. Total damage place at $9,000. Entire Nashua fire department called out but flames confined to the Servall block. Fire started in the basement and spread rapidly.
Fire swept through Dunavant Kansas at dawn destroying the hotel, general store, post office, and three residences. Losses estimated at $50,000 with partial insurance.
At 1.85 this afternoon Michael Gookin’s barn on Andover street near the Tewksbury line was found burning after an alarm from box 47. Firemen failed to save the barn, and the house also caught fire by about 2 o'clock with efforts ongoing to save it.
Harry Vardon defeated Alexander Findlay 13 up with 12 to play in a 36 hole exhibition at Tyngs Island arranged by Vesper Country Club. Vardon, opening with strong long drives and precise putting, set a course record for the first round at 38 while Findlay struggled with putts and missed chances.
Ground is broken in Hudson New Hampshire for a power house to supply extra power to the Nashua electric railway and Nashua division of the Lowell and Suburban Street Railway. Cost about 10000 dollars, contract awarded to Thomas Connel of Lovell. A 399 horsepower motor will be added, four 75 horsepower motors moved from the state line, and the new setup enables rapid use during heavy snows or peak periods. Work aims to complete before winter storms with extra labor and anticipated increased activity in Hudson. Superintendent Lee oversees patrons and managers’ interests.
Catharine EK Drury faced Judge Hadley in police court for alleged larceny of clothing from Ela Hubert. Drury, a boarder, hid items in a trunk after Mrs Hubert reported a $10 pin missing. the pin was not found but other items were. A $12 fine was imposed with probation for six months to allow installment payment. Additional drunkenness fines ranged from $2 to $10 for several individuals. Joseph Demins, a junk dealer, had his case postponed to October 31 amid two complaints of selling junk to a minor.
Edward Donohoe charged with larceny had his case continued until tomorrow. Peter Chamberlain, facing a similar charge, was convicted and scheduled for November 26.
Seth Abbott, white haired and ill, struck at his son Frederick Abbott of Chicago in Judge Walker’s Milwaukee courtroom. Relatives pacified the excited man as witnesses noted long-suffering paternal grief. Abbott, Emma Abbott’s father, had been adjudged insane and placed in a Milwaukee sanitarium. An attempt to confine him further was stopped by Judge Walker.
Charles Clements, riding a bicycle, was struck near Hale and Howard by a wood team driver who fled the scene. He suffered two fractured ribs and a badly cut forehead and was treated at St John’s hospital after regaining consciousness. Witnesses blamed the driver. an ambulance was summoned.

Peter Boyd was buried this morning in Edson cemetery by Undertaker Brooks. He died by his own action, and lay near the grave of his murdered wife. Only mourners were his father William Boyd and brother Andrew Boyd from Manchester New Hampshire. His mother Mrs Boyd was unable to attend due to grief.
About 40 youths gathered at 567 Chelmsford Street Wednesday night to present Miss Bar bra Caddell with a beautiful picture. Amasa Brown spoke, presenting the gift as Miss Caddell responded graciously. Refreshments followed, and the evening included singing and games.
