London Oct 25 Grant Allen the author known as a novelist naturalist and essayist is dead after a period of illness. Born in Kingston Ontario in 1848 he became a prominent figure in literature and criticism. The obituary notes his long career and influence in contemporary letters.
Allen Charles Grant Bilairfindie, known as a naturalist and writer, rose from minor London magazines to fame as a novelist with works including The Adventures of Miss Cayley Hilda Wade and The Woman Who Did. A Oxford graduate of 1871, he led a Jamaica government college and produced many Darwinian expositions before fiction.
The overseers of the poor statistician reports multiple John Wards in confinement. One insane man named John Ward was found in Lowell with others in Bridgewater and Worcester. A third John Ward is also described as insane, with records showing escape leads to Exeter.
Rep William H J Hayes may seek the Republican mayoralty nomination. He succeeds Col Alfred M Chadwick as a possible candidate and says many Republicans have urged him to run. He will decide after the State election and perhaps when the campaign opens.

In police court at Hadley this morning five drunks appeared. John Thompson, a first offender, was fined five dollars. Hugh F. McDonald received a one month jail sentence as a third offender. John J. O Connell faced two counts of drunkenness and assault and battery on Frank Blackstone. a continuance was granted to Tuesday. Michael Connors pleaded guilty to drunkenness and sought probation. judge noted his Lawrence residence and delayed action until his status there could be investigated, revealing a prior Lawrence case on Oct 8. The drug selling case against Albert Loomis and Israel Kronberger was continued to Monday due to counsel’s superior court duties. Winton C. Gale admitted stealing a gross of pens from the Chelmsford schoolhouse and was fined twenty dollars.
Mr and Mrs Fred McCoy Beetle hosted their second at home at their new Tyler Park residence. The decor featured pink and white flowers and palms with guests including Mrs Dr Frances H Drew and Mrs L S Beede assisting at the welcome. About 250 delegates registered by mail and hotel assignments were completed as Dwight L Rogers arrived with other state officers expected today. The public is invited to attend sessions and an address by Commander A W Wadhams is planned at the First Congregational church after 7 30 p m with a reception and banquet for delegates from 5 to 7.

District Attorney Wier pressed for sentence in the Peter M. Martin case as the superior criminal court convened. Judge Bond sentenced Martin to five years in the house of correction at Cambridge with three days solitary confinement on one count of robbery from Everett resident Mr. Gaffney. the second count was quashed.
The First Spiritualist society held the first whist party in Old Odd Fellows hall on a Wednesday evening. Coffee and cake were served. Ladies prizes went to Mrs William Kilpatrick first, Mrs Bertha Bird second, Mrs Blaisdell third, and Mrs Blood consolation. Gentlemen prizes went to J P Marchand first, W H Holman second, K A Smith third, and J M Deasy consolation. The event was led by president J S Jackson and other officers assisted.
The women of the city are invited to a 2 45 Friday meeting at St Pauls M E church in connection with the Y M C A convention. Religious Work Problems will be discussed by several able speakers. All women are invited, especially Y W C A members and friends, whose work relates to the topic.
The Men’s league of the Chelmsford Street F. B. church held a hash concert in the church vestry on Wednesday evening. Formed three weeks ago, the league attracted more than 150 attendees for a supper with all musical selections contributed by male talent, yielding over $25.
