Mrs P W Patton wife of Capt Patton of Bath Maine arrived in San Francisco with a graphic account of the burning of the George Stetson off the For mosa coast two months earlier. She was the sole woman aboard with her baby and rode a boat for two days and nights to land on Ti Pin Tsen Island. The vessel, bound from Portland Oregon to Tsen Tsen, carried lumber and was owned by the Sewalls of Bath.
Secretary of the Navy Long writes to a Cleveland paper outlining three reasons to strengthen the merchant marine. He cites financial returns from rising exports, boosted shipyard activity, and a pool of reserve sailors for the navy in wartime.
Evelyn Baldwin reports from Mobile that Capt Ernest Andree Sweden and explorer Evelyn B Bald win received a letter from the polar aeronaut’s brother. He believes Ernest Andree landed west of 180 degrees and between 83 and 87 degrees north, about 750 miles from land. He does not expect to hear from him until next summer.
Brig. Gen. Guy V. Henry, former governor of Porto Rico, died at 4 this morning at his New York home after a ten day illness from pneumonia. The family was with him except Capt. Guy Henry, his son, then serving in the Philippines.

Ladies’ skilled planning and the high school workers earned praise from visiting delegates as Mayor Crowley welcomed them to Lowell.
The second day began after 9 o'clock at St Paul’s church with Moses Paige presiding and Rev R A Torrey of Chicago leading. Torrey urged prayer as the core to obtain mercy, urged consistency, and praised the vigor of dynamic Christians over morbid faith. Delegates discussed permanent finance, board expertise, and methods to raise funds early in the year, with emphasis on practical plans and active involvement.
In the superior criminal court this morning Michael Casey pleaded not guilty to vagrancy and trial was deferred. Daniel B. Cameron pleaded guilty to keeping liquor, not sentenced. John W. Costello pleaded guilty to larceny, sentence not imposed. The Greek assault case resumed with Mr Hogan making his defence argument at noon.
In Chelmsford on October 17 a son was born to Mr and Mrs William Stuart.
