Otis cables report the transport Grant with the 26th volunteers and recruits reached Manila yesterday with no casualties. The Aztec with civilian employees arrived this morning. Seven horses were lost, while all other personnel are in good condition.
A Cape Town dispatch dated October 9 reports another battle at Ladysmith with Boers repulsed. British casualties listed as four killed and seven wounded, all rank and file.
Five United States transports are due to depart today. Three will head directly to Manila, while two will go to Portland, Oregon to embark the 40th regiment for service in the Philippines. The movement signals intensified U S military deployment in the Far East theater.

Boston, Oct. 25. The Grand Royal Arch chapter of Massachusetts celebrated its centennial at the new Masonic Temple. Prominent Masons from across the country attended, marking a brilliant gathering in Boston. The 100th anniversary was officially in March 1898, but observance was delayed by the prior officer’s illness. Representatives from the grand lodge of Massachusetts and other national Masonic bodies were received with honors.
The M V M State shoot at Walnut Hill range featured unusually fine individual scores but weaker team results. The 1st Heavy Artillery won with 1304 points, edging the 5th Infantry at 1269, while Troop D Roxbury captured the carbine trophy from Troop F Chelmsford in a strong overall showing.
In Lowell, James A Cudworth and Thomas C Ramsay proprietors of the Belvidere hotel pleaded guilty to illegal liquor keeping and were fined 100 dollars after the afternoon session. Peter M Martin pleaded not guilty to robbery with a jury empanelled. Armenian witness Isaac Massadean testified through an interpreter about the assault and robbery, detailing losses of money and a bloodstained shirt and broken lamp.
The jury found Anastasis Loumos guilty and the court fined him 100 dollars. John B Marston pleaded guilty to a similar offence and received a 100 dollar fine as well.
Textile unions in Lowell and vicinity are invited to send seven delegates to a council meeting at Mule Spinners hall 22 Middle Street on Monday evening October 30. The agenda: organize public rallies to educate workers on fair wages, eight hours work, and two dollars per day, citing Fall River's 10 percent demand as a model and urging united action to raise wages without friction. Administrations granted to a wide list including W H Clarke Cambridge Ellen Curtin Cambridge Edward Walsh Belmont and several more across Massachusetts towns.
Four drunks appeared before the police court. Bridget Whalen paid a five dollar fine and Al bina Butcher, pledging to care for her child and abstain from drinking, was placed under probation for six months. Onwards Jones faced non support charges and was discharged with obligation to continue supporting his wife. Victor Gagnier pleaded guilty to larceny and was fined fifteen dollars or two months in jail. James Eagan was granted a continuance to Oct thirty. Joseph Bellrose defaulted for not appearing for removing baggage.
At a brief board of health meeting on Tuesday it was reported that Earle and Fitzgerald, the smallpox patients, will be released today and provided with new clothes. The cost of the case vaccination and other expenses is expected to be from 500 to 600 dollars.
The bustling superior court resumed the Peter M Martin robbery trial, with J J Hennessy finishing arguments urging acquittal citing co defendants and unreliable identification Gaffney led the police to Martins home in Dutton Street while witnesses testified about drinking and alleged actions. Several liquor and forging cases followed including Halgren’s powder mill accident and Powers charged with illegally keeping liquor. jurors reported after a lengthy session with the Martin verdict of guilty on both counts.
