Gen. Lieber reports 6680 court martial trials in the past fiscal year with 36 officers and 6618 enlisted men. Of those tried, 6020 enlisted and 26 officers were convicted, and 2585 men were sentenced to dishonorable discharge. Death sentences occurred in six cases with one murder, four rape, and one for striking a superior.
Canton, Oct 24. Official reports say Hui Chow prefecture cities still hold out. Rebels confine actions to villagers captures and ambushing imperial troops. About 10,000 imperial soldiers remain in the field. The Chinese general commands Hui Chow and fears leaving the city to avoid being cut off.
Lynn police received a letter from Mrs. G Irene Best of Thompsonville Conn claiming that Jean C Best accused of murdering George E Bailey may be her husband who left her in Troy N Y fourteen years ago. She offers information and police will investigate the claim.
In Cleveland on October 24 a temporary iron cage will be built in the criminal court room to contain Edward Ruthven a Black man on trial for a serious case involving Patrolman Shipp. Ruthven threatened to shoot Sergeant Detective Doran and is described as dangerous.
The body of a richly dressed man about fifty was found in Portland Harbor. Watch and money were gone and a card bearing the name Walter B. Hoyt of New York was found in his clothing. Police believe the man was robbed during the night and his body cast into the harbor.
Chicago observers report a three years agreement with structural iron workers ends labor troubles over the new post office project. A large force will start to work immediately as construction proceeds under the settlement reached yesterday in Chicago dated October 24.
