Friends of Mr. Charles Needham gathered at Forrest and Chelmsford streets on Sunday to present a dinner service as a warm celebration. John Wilkinson of Lowell spoke for 65 guests then Needham and Mrs. Needham thanked all, followed by music, readings, graphophone selections, and a late hour casewarming with refreshments supervised by Mrs. Hodgson and Mr. Pickup.
Early Sunday morning Gauwilliam Pauwells a Belgian boarding at 201 Methuen street was found dead in a smoking room. The medical examiner ruled suffocation from a room fire with his left foot burned at the floor hole. Police deem the death accidental. Pauwells, 42, leaves a widow and child in the city.
Fall terms in dressmaking start the last week of October and split into two classes. The preparatory course covers draughting, cutting, fitting and making dresses of wash material. An evening class offers 12 lessons and the dressmaking course teaches making, draughting and fitting of skirts and waists. Classes meet Tuesday evenings at 7.30. 24 lessons required. Early registration urged.

Washington reports Hon. John Sherman died at 6 45 this morning after 86 hours of unconsciousness from brain exhaustion. The long serving statesman and lawyer held posts in Congress the Senate and as secretary of the treasury and state. He shaped Republican policies from 1854 onward and aided war finance and reconstruction before retiring in 1898. His funeral plans include services in Washington Mansfield Ohio and a Thursday ceremony.
Washington October 22 The death of Sherman prompts half mast flags and a presidential proclamation praising his personal qualities and civic service. A message to ambassadors abroad signals national mourning as departments close and public business suspends for the funeral.
Governor Roosevelt begins statewide tour by train from Weehawken aiming to cover 2146 miles within New York and deliver 93 speeches at key locations. The trip intends to reach all principal towns and centers across the state.
Mount Carmel Pa Oct 22 The miners relief committee issues a circular urging support for the families of the district strikers. It says while the strike may end soon, payment to the workers could be delayed a month, leaving families in need.
The sewer committee at Lowell City Hall discussed seeking 5000 as the gas company’s bonus toward Rock and School streets sewer work after a prior offer of 2000. Aldermen Barton Badger and Whittier voted to urge approval, while city officials noted a 30,000 request to fund department needs and pending sewer projects on Woodward Avenue Wilder Weed and High streets. Dunbar expects a response within a day or two.
Gen Voyron reports from Taku that French forces occupy the railroad and depot at Pao Ting Fu in China. They are reconnoitering to the north and south toward the terminus while the line is being repaired.
Joseph Sheehan alias Joseph Sayward arrested on drunkenness on Central street with John Tilden of Norwich and George Wright of Dover. Officers learned Sheehan is wanted in Newburyport for felonious assault. he surrendered and was sent to face the charge. Tilden and Wright held for Lowell police to contact Dover and Norwich authorities.
County commissioners will consult counsel on the legality of contributing to rebuilding the Pawtucket bridge after a Saturday conference with the Pawtucket bridge sub-committee. Alderman Carmichael says Locks and Canals will donate land to widen bridge approaches. Saturday tax total reached 364000, two day total 654000.
Ward 3 Republican rally invites residents to Highland Hall Branch Street on Wednesday evening October 24 to hear good speaking and enjoy rousing campaign songs by a local glee club.
Republicans prepare for an enthusiastic demonstration in Towell Massachusetts with a detailed march order. The parade forms on Appleton and Eliot streets, reports due by 7.15 to 7.30, parade route includes Central Merrimack Pawtucket School Broadway Wilder Westford and Chelmsford streets where review and dismissal occur.

The October term of the superior criminal court opened at 10 a.m. Judge Sherman presided. Jurors answered to their names as many defendants pleaded guilty, yielding little work for the jury. Sentences ranged from three to eighteen months in houses of correction, with several placed on probation. Notable defendants included George E. Kittredge, Joseph Gannon, John H. Rydle, Nellie Forbes, Patrick Coyle, Martin Carr, Edward F. Cropper, Maxine Gauthier, Joseph Boudreau, James P. Doherty, William Black, Peter J. Bowers, James Carroll, and others facing larceny, breaking and entering, adultery, drunkenness, and assault charges. A number of cases were continued or defaulted, with some defendants awaiting further trial or probation terms.
A burglar entered the home of Thomas Costello on Nesmith Street Saturday night. An alarm alerted police, but the suspect fled before officers arrived at the scene.
About a dozen first offending drunks appeared in Judge Hadley's court this morning, a busier session than usual. With Deputy Moffatt at the superior criminal court, Inspector Donaldson led the government’s cases. Adolph Frenier of Tyngsboro was among those processed.
