The body of Arthur Tallard killed by a train in Lyndonville Vermont on Saturday morning arrived here Monday and the funeral was held yesterday morning at St Joseph s church. He was buried in the French Catholic cemetery.

Surgeon-General Newton L. Bates of the navy, personal physician to the President, died at the Shoreham hotel in Washington at 9 80 oclock Monday morning from renal trouble. Appointed surgeon-general about two weeks earlier to succeed Tryon, he took the oath in bed due to illness. Bates entered the navy in June 1861 from New York state and had served as medical director with rank of captain before his appointment, working at the naval museum of hygiene in Washington.
