In Lynn on Friday, Fred F. Lanphy 26 and Benjamin Lanphy 20 were arrested for assaulting Patrolman Leahy amid a gang attack in Boston. Separately, 17 Fall River men, mostly candy storekeepers, were jailed Friday for selling hop beer above the legal standard.
A night accident near Millhouse station on the Mobile and Birmingham line in St Louis left the engineer and fireman dead and several others injured as the entire train plunged over a 12 foot embankment.
Lizzie Fleming, 35, a servant for grocer Alanson C Dickson, seized by homicidal mania at midnight. She hacked Mrs Dieckson fatally and struck Mr Dickson and his daughter. Found unconscious under the front porch this morning.
Great Barrington Oct 16 George Spencer a Grand Army man was shot and instantly killed at Hartsville this morning by Nathaniel Moseley a half witted man Moseley escaped Spencer aged 52 leaves a wife and three children Spencer stood in his doorway when shot.
Five year old Alice Holbrook died after leaping in front of an electric car in Malden on October 16. The fender struck her, crushing her body.
Edward Langtry, husband of Lillian Langtry, died at the Chester insane asylum last night. Officials say death likely resulted from concussion after a recent steamer accident.
Nansen the Arctic explorer along with William K. Vanderbilt and Bishop Perry departed Liverpool today aboard the Lucania bound for New York.
A reporter duo met Henry French at Merrimack and Central streets this morning. He claimed to be from Salem and last visited Lowell in 1846, saying he now resides in a small northern New York town. The city had altered drastically since his departure.

The Republican club of Massachusetts postpones its Oct 20 annual dinner due to late cancellations from eminent speakers. The Boston committee, led by Secretary Elihu B. Frank L. Redhead, a mail clerk at the Post Office, was arrested by Capt. Moffatt on a charge of larceny from the United States mails after a decoy letter was found on his person. The Post Office had reported numerous money losses and, despite Redhead’s claim that the letters were kept for convenience, the postmaster ordered his arrest. The decoy letter had been mailed the previous night and two others were recovered with his clothes. Redhead denied any guilty knowledge and remained calm as the investigation continued.
The accused, Frank Redhead known as Pinkie, is suspected of pilfering mail as a Boston area decoy letter scheme expands. A posting clerk earning about $600 yearly, he reportedly flashed large cash, raising suspicions as 15 letters weekly failed to reach destinations. He will be examined by Inspector George S. Evans in Boston. His mother resides at 282 Salem Street.
Frank L. Redhead, a Lowell post office clerk in the mailing department, was arrested last night on charges of tampering with the mails. He was taken to Boston by a U. S. deputy marshal at 11:20 this forenoon. He denies criminal intent, claiming letters were dropped or fell from a stamping machine before being disposed of, and he will be arraigned before a U. S. commissioner in Boston this afternoon.
Warrant for the arrest of two bogus newspaper men, Bernal Osborne and Almiron Perkins, has gone to Bangor Maine. If they pay debts in Maine towns they must also settle the Lowell bills before release. Likely a long sentence awaits given numerous complaints.
Alexander Chisholm aged 41 residing at 41 Rock Street fell from a telegraph post on Lawrence Street yesterday afternoon about 8 o'clock. He sustained multiple injuries including broken wrists both legs and a broken patella. He was taken to St. John's hospital for treatment.
A Boston & Maine attorney, Edgar J. Rich, reported to Sept. Davis that Arthur Lallard was killed in Lyndonville Vermont this morning. He asked for any information, noting a mother in Lowell, but the Lowell city directory shows no such name.

Nettle Fleming charged with receiving $700 stolen from Francis A. Benton of this city was found guilty in the Superior court in Boston Friday and sent to the reformatory at Sherborn for one year. The money was recovered with $2800 additional, and a watch snatched from Benton on Porter street, Boston.
