Washington October 14 It was announced in the Supreme Court that Justice Stephen J Field of California has notified the President of his intention to retire and has informed his colleagues. The court members, after adjournment, paid their respects to him as a group.
Mrs Victoria Whitney and a committee from the Woman's Equal Suffrage club called on Street Commissioner Milner in St Louis on October 14. They demanded women be appointed as street inspectors. Milner agreed that 10 of the 40 inspectors shall be women.
Four persons were killed when the Toronto express on the Canadian Pacific collided with a freight at Stittsville near Ottawa Ont early today. An engineer a mail clerk and two tramps died and many passengers were injured as several cars and both engines were wrecked.
May Marks aged 12 died after falling asleep while studying in bed with a candle beside her. Her sleeve caught fire and she inhaled flames. Her father badly burned trying to rescue her in Bridgton Maine on October 14.
Chicago society figure Miss Marie Hitch will wed Henry George Jr., the son of mayoral candidate Henry George of New York, on Thanksgiving Day in Chicago. The pairing links a prominent Chicago socialite with a national political figure’s family.

The Andover Conference schedules its semi annual meeting at the Third Street Church in Lowell on Tuesday. Activities begin at 3 p.m. with organization and business followed by book reviews, sermons, church work topics, a supper at 5.30 and a symposium closing the evening with five minute addresses.

A cyclist knocked down Mrs. Mary J. Stevens of 28 Butterfield Street at Broadway and Dutton yesterday at 5 PM. She hit her head on a sharp surface, sustained a bad gash, and lay delirious at St. John’s Hospital overnight. The unknown rider fled, leaving his bike. Lt. Ken recovered the wheel. Stevens is mother-in-law of John W. Anderson, Kitson Machine Shop paymaster, who visited the hospital this morning. Her condition was reported improved.
The Y M C A held its annual reception showing a bright, open hall. Palms decorated the building while the Ladies Lyceum orchestra performed all evening. Miss Gertrude Pratt, Miss Minnie M Brown, Miss Charlotte Hope and Miss Irene Osgood took part as featured musicians with Secretary Harry W J Howe and an informal committee assisting the young men present.
Inspector Durgin arrested Frank Brier of Lowell on a sneak throwing charge in Haverhill, claiming he helped disrupt a gang operating in Haverhill Lawrence and the city. Brier, using a false name, denied the larceny of 26 dollars at Belanger’s on Wingate street and faced grand jury bonds of 300 dollars. A second alleged theft at Currier’s Washington street shop involved 12 dollars. Skeleton keys found in one room tied him to the gang. a partner escaped.
The Paige Street F. B. church annual harvest dinner drew many friends today with 11:30 to 2 and 5 to 7 serving periods. Mrs. R. A. Bearce led the successful event with assistants Mrs. John Roberts and Mrs. Curtis Huntley managing, while Mrs. W. Hatch supervised the tables and a long list of waiters contributed.

George Fletcher Gardner youngest son of Mr and Mrs Theodore F Gardner and brother of W G Gardner of Gardner Brothers in this city died Wednesday morning at Mary Fletcher hospital Burlington Vermont aged 20 years two months He went to Burlington Sept 27 to attend University of Vermont for a four year chemical course but fell ill with peritonitis and died He was an active member of the First Baptist church and an exemplary young man A funeral notice appears elsewhere Also Gershom Edward Holtham former resident of 4 Varnum avenue Lowell died Oct 1 in Portland Maine aged 38 after moving from Lowell to St Paul and then Portland
Venison is plentiful with steak at 40 cents per pound. A large selection of fish on ice, including brook trout, priced at 16 cents per pound. Overall market conditions similar to last week with flour showing a downward trend. Grapes cheaper and more plentiful.
In the police court this morning Frank Angluin John O Hara and James McGuinness all young men were before the court charged with the larceny of lead piping. They were found probably guilty and were held in 100 each for their appearance before the Superior court. John Gallivan charged with drunkenness was found guilty and was sent enced to six months at the state farm. George Herbert was found guilty of larceny and was sent to jail for five months.
The John Eliot Literary society has been organized in the Eliot church with officers: H. B. Greene president, Harry Caverly vice president, Miss Hattie Wakefield secretary, and John P. Wright treasurer.

Superior Court judge Lilley notes the case remains on the docket and is likely to proceed to a jury today. The participants Davis and Smith and the Town of Tewksbury are the named parties in the lingering civil action and the court is expected to deliver a jury verdict later in the day.
