William Shaine shot and killed Mrs. Freeman Lee in Boyne Falls Michigan last night and, cornered by officers, killed himself. Shaine said the woman squandered money he had given her to procure a divorce.
Berne Oct 7 The national council adopted a bill to purchase Switzerland five principal railroads for 200 million dollars bringing the nation to full state control of its railway system. The country already runs a comprehensive telegraph network under state authority.
In Lisbon New Hampshire on October 7 the court discharged Karl Brummer a tailor once charged with a murderous assault on his employee Ida Lathrop.
Washington October 7. The President appointed Rufus Fleming of Ohio as consul at Edinburgh Scotland and Samuel A. MacAlister of Delaware as consul at Barbadoes in the West Indies.

Mrs Harriet Osgood formerly of Lowel died Monday in Alexandria Virginia aged 81 widow of George W Shedd an old Lowell resident and he was for years a member of St Pauls church
James Carville the boy badly injured Tuesday afternoon is reported in more favorable condition at St Johns hospital today. The boy Pall who was run over yesterday afternoon is also somewhat improved in the same facility.
John Foley was fined 20 dollars in the Police court this morning for assault and battery on John Heenan. The pair had been on friendly terms but quarreled after a barroom dispute. Heenan, employed by Lowell and Suburban Street Railway, was injured. Foley had no counsel and pleaded not guilty. Other filings include Buckley fined for drunkenness, Courneandaros fined for assault on a fellow countryman, Feeney sentenced to four months in the workhouse, Foster's case continued, and Chief Hosmer is complainant on a bicycle scorching ordinance.
City officials debated the cost of the recent outing with an $800 baseball bill and questioned catering charges by T A Golden as tickets and entries were tracked. The mayor must sign the draft to approve bills as Oct 20 interest looms. John F Murphy proposed a 40 by 120 shed costing about $500 for cart protection and asked to place 10 Board of Health horses in the street department stables due to winter space shortages and costly livery fees.
The Journal of Education notes Lowell’s new state Normal school on Broadway will start soon, with practice work and model school features. The jury yesterday afternoon awarded the plaintiff $600 in the case of McManus versus Donahoe with N D Pratt for the defendant saving exceptions for a new trial. In Superior court this morning Scholefield versus Boston and Maine Railroad resumed, an action for land damages with N D Pratt for the plaintiff and the Richardsons for the defendant.
