A pear tree planted 263 years ago in Cambridge’s Stone family lot yields fruit again. A Richmond farmer trains a rat dog to warm tobacco plants, saving labor. Boston’s twelve vacations and gardens average 2080 youths daily. Medina Pa schools offer extra holiday for lowest tardiness. A Cincinnati corn ear shows over a thousand grains. Hawkesbury Canada notes a grain conduit worn by bushels. New Zealand law compels intoxicated men to have photos taken for authorities and bars taverns from serving. City Hall notes 70,000 dollars in tax money. 35 unlicensed dogs shot as law lapse ends.
Boston October meeting at Music Hall opens with Col Goetting as temporary chair and Moody as permanent chairman. Delegates back the old ticket with Wolcott for governor and Crane, Olin, Knowlton, Shaw, Kimball, and others. Platform backs gold standard, larger forces, Philippine and Cuban self governance, and probes into war department. Balloting runs long with Barrows leading early but no gain, Towle and Paige competing as adjournment motions fail.
Minneapolis reports Gen. Bacon’s force of 80 men under heavy Indian attack. Inspector Tinker states the Third Infantry detachment was wiped out near Walker and that signals to the war department failed. A later special train from Fort Snelling carries Companies B F and H with 200 men and a gatling gun to the scene.
Charles A. Mitchell John A. Storey Harry Dunlap and Chris Holmes discussed Friday night closing. They prefer Friday night closing but require widespread participation to succeed. If only a few stores close it would do little harm to owners.
In Hadley court this morning Lewis N. Young pleaded for release after drunkenness charges but was fined five dollars. Ann J. McCluskey and three other first offenders were placed on file or fined one dollar. Joseph Colack and Frank Archer, linked to the William street disturbance, were fined one dollar for drunkenness and eight dollars for disturbing the peace, Archer having a similar fine previously. Alphonse Gingross faced fornication trial and was continued for superior court on bonds of five hundred dollars. John McMahon was found guilty of drunkenness and larceny and sentenced to two months in Lowell jail for each offense. In superior court Jefferson v. Richardson went to the jury, which returned a verdict for the defendant after twenty minutes. Gray, administrator, v. Richardson et al. remains on the docket.
Hon Joseph J Flynn of Lawrence was nominated by acclamation at the Democratic convention in Association hall to be the party’s candidate for Congress from Massachusetts Fifth District. The gathering endorsed his record in the state legislature and pledged to support working people against wage cuts and protracted mills shutdowns, contrasting with Knox’s promises and noting wartime mismanagement.
Brockton Massachusetts resident Marceline Paquitte recounts a doctor saying her breast sore was cancer. She says Hood's Sarsaparilla healed the initial wound after one bottle and again cured a second sore on her cheek. She advertises Hood's products, pricing at $1 or six for $5.
The convention advocates a complete investigation by Congress into mismanagement by the War Department and enforcement of punishment for the guilty, accusing the Republican administration of blocking inquiry. James F. Owens leads a slate of delegates as the party seeks to rally working people, with resolutions denouncing Secretary Russell Alger and pledging to pursue Algerism probes if elected. Adjournment followed as delegates addressed the crowd and selected the congressional committee.
Local retailer promotes light colored Sears weight top coats from Mark Andrews & Co Boston at about one half their cost. Despite warm weather demand stays high with only about seven left. Fall and winter weight coats show prices 25 to 33 percent lower than competing outlets.
Local death notices report Mrs. Sarah Drew of Westford and Mrs. Cynthia Tarbox of Chelmsford among the bereaved, with details on kin and residences. Funeral announcements include John M. Richardson and Deran Kenyon, plus Fox, Raiche Roth, and Larcom obituaries. The Ward Trres Republican club held a social at the Branch engine house with brief remarks and refreshments.
