In Huntington hall the Republican county convention opened with no candidate achieving a majority on the informal ballot. George A. Roper led among 398 delegates with 160 votes, while George A. Upham and Charles B. Stone trailed. The session recited nominations for county officers and prepared for further balloting after a 30 minute recess.
English fox hunters are forced to hunt foxes brought from Germany as cubs remain scarce in Bedfordshire. To sustain sport next winter many young foxes have been imported and released in various parts of the country, prompting farmer objections.

Goodyear mill workers aided the town’s defense, the only fire protection available, with 400 men rushed to halt the flames.
Westchester PA October 5 William Baldwin, thought to be burned to death in a barn fire Friday actually died by his own hand. He entered the burning barn and the flames likely drove him to cut his throat with a pocket knife still lodged in the wound.

Patrolman Patrick H. Brady was laid to rest in a Catholic cemetery in an orderly, somber ceremony. A pair of youths aged about 16 and 21 robbed Harry Hanson’s variety store at Lincoln and Main, grabbing a tin cash box containing about $20 as a diversion. Police inspected suspects but all had alibis. coins spilled in the escape were found in the orchard.

The Brinley Mansion in Tyngsboro and the Dr Fitzgeralds sanitarium were destroyed by a morning fire about seven o'clock. The main building was saved. all inmates escaped unharmed. The damaged section housed a kitchen laundry and printing office with an estimated loss of 2000 dollars. A local steamer and hose carriage responded. Cause unknown.
A barn fire at 1 15 pm near Edson Cemetery damaged hay and grain but two horses were saved. The Marshall sisters own the barn and the property was insured. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Superior Court session opens with John McManus versus Peter Donahoe over bond indemnity for sheriff seized property under writ of replevin. Attorneys B D OConnell and J C Burke represent the plaintiff, N D Pratt for the defendant. Johnson v McManus settled with judgment for the plaintiff after an attachment dispute tied to furniture misattributed to Donahoe of Lawrence. John J and Wm A Hogan appear for the plaintiff with B D OConnell for the defense.

The long political fight in Lowell ends with Jeremiah O Neil named superintendent of the new normal school building. He has long served as a conductor for the Lowell and Suburban street railway. The appointment was made by the visiting committee of the state board of education and not endorsed by local representatives.
In Hadley Police Court six individuals cited for drunkenness each one dollar. Richard Lane received two months in the work house for drunkenness. James and Powell Reay paid five dollar fines for drunkenness. Zotique Hamelin was fined twenty dollars for selling adulterated coffee.
Deaths announced for Mary Mongovan aged 68 with funeral on Tuesday at 3 PM. Barbara Wallace also aged 68 dies at 141 Fayette Street, residence of her son in law. James Haley aged one year four months, dies at 58 Perry Street.
