Lawrence report states Mayor Eaton vetoed a council order to pay wages to three city employees who enlisted in Company F Ninth Massachusetts. The veto cites illegality and unfairness for creating a preferred class among the soldiers. The council failed to secure a two thirds vote to pass over the veto.
Ninth regiment officers met with mustering officer Lieut Col Weaver to fix mustering on November 16. Soldiers to assemble November 6 in armories and stay there until mustering. Rations for captains' men provided. home living men may board and draw 25 cents daily commutation. Jacob Lane, of the Second Massachusetts, shot in the leg at Santiago, fears a permanent injury. Weeks after the wound he limps badly and has been advised to enter a hospital. His brother Sylvester Lane of Company M is seriously ill in a Boston hospital.
In Sherman, Superior Court this morning the defendant’s witness examination concluded with rebuttal testimony heard. The court adjourned at 12:50 p.m. to reconvene at 2 p.m. for further rebuttal testimony.
The board of engineers of the fire department met last night and filled the vacancies in the force of callmen by appointing Daniel Conroy and Peter Sheehan. The school board accounts committee approved bills last night.
George H. Osborne of 179 Middlesex street fell from a car on High street fracturing his collar bone and was taken to St. John's hospital. Ismail Tonges, an operative of the Lawrence hosiery, was admitted to the Corporation hospital with a scalp wound. Hood's Sarsaparilla is advertised as curing many blood diseases with widespread praise.
Middlesex Women's Club begins its fifth year in a new Colonial hall located in the Colonial building. The auditorium features a 43 by 75 foot assembly space, a stage 19 by 14, seating for 400 on the main floor and 200 on the balcony, with reception rooms forming part of the hall. Heating uses indirect and direct systems with large duct ventilation, and the decor blends ivory white, green, pink, red, and mahogany finishes.
