The body of Henry George was laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery after a short private funeral in New York. Rev. Dr. Kramer and Rev. Fr. McGlynn officiated and paid tribute as hundreds of laboring men viewed the body with no demonstrations.
The Buck-Ivanhoe tunnel, two miles long, costing 1.25 million dollars, was abandoned by the Colorado Midland. Trains will run over the Hagerman pass as the railroad refused the other company’s offer.
Nathan Stark, a prominent Mercer farmer, was held up by neighbor Ira Sexton who tried to rob him. Stark resisted and was shot dead. Sexton was arrested.
Thomas Johnson charged with illegally keeping liquor was tried in the Superior court criminal session this morning. Jurors returned a guilty verdict after arguments by D. J. Donahue and Wier. John F. Noyes trial continued at adjournment with Inspectors Donaldson and Goodwin testifying. Paul B. Smith remains under sentence for larceny from Sidney Drewett.
Maurice J. King reported missing from Fourth street yesterday is hospitalized at St John’s with suspected appendicitis. He telephoned from the hospital in the morning, placed in bed in great pain, and an operation is likely. King, a hairdresser, works at the Merrimack street barber shop and is well known in the Central M. E. church communities.
Katie Haley aged eight living at 58 Perry street was playing when a gate from a high fence fell, fracturing both bones in her right leg. An ambulance took her to St. John's hospital. The other girl escaped injury.
A dated note from the office of the Superintendent of Public Schools Oct 80 1897 to the U S Cartridge Co agent reports a worker expelled from Edson evening school for bad conduct and thus not legally employable by any corporation. The superintendent A K Whitcomb signs the letter.

Sadda Khan and his brother the Maddakhels chiefs surrendered to the British at Simla India on November 1 a move described as an important step in settlement of the Tochi difficulty and the British backed effort to restore order in the region.
Parson Davies has challenged Tut Ryan of Australia on behalf of Joe Choynski for a boxing match in Chicago on December 8. Davis seeks to set the bout with Ryan as challenger and Choynski’s representative coordinating the terms in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 1.
Berlin reports an engine collided with a passenger train near Leipsic this morning. Six people died and thirty were injured in the crash.
A crowded police court cage held drunks as most pleaded guilty. Sentences included workhouse terms from five to six months, jail terms, fines of five or ten dollars, and several probation dispositions. A few cases, including two hackmen, were continued to November 2.

John L. Cheney died Sunday morning at 63 Chelmsford Street after a brief illness. Born March 20, 1816 in Weare New Hampshire, he worked in harness making before moving to Lowell in 1889 with Merrimack Manufacturing. He led bobbin and shuttle manufacturing, later partnering with his sons as John Jl Cheney & Co. He retired in 1891. He served as trustee and vice president of Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank, director of Prescott National Bank, and trustee of Lowell Cemetery, with three terms on the school committee. He leaves a widow, three sons John P of Boston, Mward and Frank P of Lowell, and daughter Mrs. Sarah GC Willoughby of Port Townsend, Washington.
David C Donoghue aged 27 died at home 22 Royal street after years of ill health with travel to Colorado and Southern California. He was a high school graduate class of 85 and leaves a mother three sisters and a brother. John Russ aged 86 died Sunday at his home in Flaver hill formerly ran City hotel Belvidere and St Julian house Dubuque and spent last two years in real estate in Haverhill.
The funeral for Celia Connelly occurred Sunday at 2 PM from 317 Lakeview Avenue with Rev. Scannel officiating. Bearers included Joseph Clark James Garrigan Patrick Byrne Peter Pendergast Patrick Gilbride and John Henry. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery under C. H. Molloy.
The testimonial dance to Mr. John Kenney at the Lowell Reform club rooms Saturday evening sold over 300 tickets. The Manhattan orchestra provided music and a large staff of officers managed the event including General manager James Gorman and floor director James O Loughlin.
The St Josephs bazaar ended Saturday with a large attendance. Principal prizes went to Mrs. E Lavalee for the piano and Miss Blanche Savageau for the gold watch while Miss Ida Tarte claimed the lady's bicycle. Minor prizes were awarded and the sewing machine winner will be announced today. Afterward the hall staff had to clear for the St Patrick's Cadet band concert held last night.

Elizabeth Bailey died at 67 in her home on Crosby street. Edward Connelly and Celia Connelly, widow of William Connelly, died aged 32 and 59 respectively on Hudson Street and Lakeview Avenue. Johnny Cheney aged 81 died at Chelmsford Street with funeral at 53 Chelmsford Street Tuesday at 2. Agnes K Williams aged several months died at Gorham Street. David C Donoghue aged 27 died at 22 Royal Street. James Francis Fay aged 32 died at St John's Hospital and funeral from Molloy Warerooms at 2 PM.
Frank Breen, a boy, suffered crushed toes when his foot was caught between a turntable and the wall near the Concord river bridge on Sunday. He was removed to St. John's Hospital. Several other children incurred minor injuries at the same location.
