NOTA BENE. Ballots falling like snow flakes is a simile frequently heard about this time, but today rain drops would be a bet ter figure. Chicago is on a crusade against department stores, but it will find it more of a task than to reach the bargain counter on a busy day. Only one bid for Union Pacific, but it was a big one. Major Ginter's cigarette money will build a technical school in Richmond, which is more good than usually comes from the coffin nails. It is clearing weather that suits merchants with big stocks of goods.
Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank mourns John L Cheney who died Sunday October 31 1897 after thirty four years as a bank trustee and eleven years as vice president. He was senior board member and the sole survivor from the bank's first decade. Trustees honor his steadfast service as a valuable officer and citizen. Sympathy extended to his family. resolution records will note the tribute.
Captain Jerry Horton finds mast boom and sail in the bay proving the four missing youths from Swampscott went to a watery grave. Massachusetts notes also cover the 1896 McTammany voting machines being sent back to the State House and a Bradford history manuscript return from Ambassador Bayard.
Edward Hamilton, a Worcester County Institution of Savings employee, shot and killed his wife and daughter and mortally wounded his baby before fatally shooting himself at home. The sole witness was the servant girl. Hamilton had been ill, suffering neuralgia and opiate use, with a reportedly happy marriage.
In Frankfort Kentucky a gun battle on the streets left Ben Marshall and other political workers attacked. Frank Egbert was riddled with bullets and three others were fatally wounded after a street fight that began around 1 30 this morning. The assailants were intoxicated and fired on Marshall. friends returned fire.
The bishops completed their semi annual session in Baltimore on November 2. They voted to meet next year in Albion Michigan and announced annual visitations to conferences with dates in South Attleboro April 18 Worcester April 6 and leaders Bishop Vincent and Bishop Newman scheduled to preside.
Reports from across the state say heavy rain up to noon reduced polling by twenty to fifty percent compared with last year. Officials predict a markedly lighter vote statewide as inclement weather dampens turnout.
Three Lowell youths Walter Ford 15 Harry Etu 13 and William Mc Carty 15 trudged to Boston seeking work they were promised by a young man who vanished after they traveled from Lowell since 6 AM the previous day. Michael Brosnahan and Walter Bowden were fined $10 each, Bowden jailed a month for abusive remarks and nonpayment. John Dolan fined $3 for drunkenness. Fred Myers, a vagrant, held over until a father is found.
A morning scan of polling places reveals a notably light vote amid a storm and apathy. Precincts report subdued activity with Democrats slightly ahead in several spots, while Republicans rally plans target afternoon turnout to keep parity with the Democratic vote.

The Low ell and Suburban street railway launches a seven face transfer system on all lines. Conductor rules require identifying routes by passenger destination and headwear, with strict limitations between Nesmith High street Varnum and depot transfers. George E Coburn leaves Lowell Five Cent Savings for cashier post at Courier Citizen Co Hampden County Association of Teachers. Alderman Lee of Boston missed his train. he invites Mr Blood and Mr Marden for a drive in the Boston Park system if weather permits.
Jeremiah Murray died November 1 at his Cross Street home. He was 65 years old and formerly lived on Murray Lane. Funeral arrangements are pending with the local undertaker.
The monthly meeting of the board of patrons of the Ayer Home will be held at the Home Wednesday afternoon at o'clock.
