Contractor Kelleher of North Chelmsford will begin a new road extension to the junction of School and Depot streets. Memorial exercises were held Sunday at the Second Congregational church in North Chelmsford with Rev. Robert W. Dunbar delivering the sermon.
The Lowell District Sunday School association holds its annual convention this Wednesday, May 1, with three sessions at the Congregational church in the morning and afternoon and the Baptist church in the evening. Prominent district workers will give addresses. Chelmsford cadets will practice drill at town hall Monday at 10, moved from the afternoon slot.
The Court of Cassation opened in Paris to hear debates on revision in the Dreyfus case. A verdict is expected Friday as an immense crowd fills the venue amid extensive orders to keep peace.
The Middle West was visited by a series of tornadoes from Friday through the weekend, hitting Nebraska South Dakota Iowa Wisconsin Minnesota and northern Illinois. Six tornadoes were reported with accompanying lightning rain and hail. A dozen lives were lost and crops damaged in the widespread destruction. Large sections were laid waste with extensive property loss across several states.
In New York three members of a tough gang were stabbed in the ab domen at a restaurant on Tenth avenue this morning by the proprietor Adolf Rabb and his assistant John McNey. The gang was attempting a robbery. Rabb and McNey are elderly men of good reputation. A floating ghennena. Cargo of sulphur on fire and passengers burned.
Mayor Crowley comments on Thomas H. Muldoon lawsuit against Lowell City. He says the case raises whether a department head can create a new office and set salaries without other approval, and notes Muldoon has never been appointed as a weigher and will not be.
Enforcements against no license drive have pushed the liquor trade to Nashua line and into Dracut via electric rail routes. Arrests over the weekend highlight extended drunkenness as police units monitor Lawrence line venues and nearby towns. An intoxicated man leaped from a moving car on Lakeview Avenue, later treated by an ambulance. The spread of drinking persists along the Lawrence line despite patrols.
In Lowell the mayor spoke at a Memorial Day program in the high school hall. The audience applauded warmly as he recounted the Sixth regiment at Baltimore in 1861 and shared reminiscences of General B F Butler. Superintendent Whitcomb offered brief remarks and cheers followed.

In police court this morning Judge Hadley presided over over 50 offenders gathered since Saturday with more than 40 charged with drunkenness. Ten drunks arrived Saturday from Dracut, seven local drunks, and seven from Lawrence. two men arrested for illegal fishing in Tewksbury. Officers Boyle Ryan and others disrupted a pocket speakeasy in an alley near Broadway and Dutton Street, finding eight quart bottles and a stash of paraphernalia. Two accidents left a man with a broken leg after a stone fell through a scuttle.
American Canoe Association camps in Horn Pond Woburn with large attendance anticipated through tomorrow. Grounds offer high dry bluff and oak pine grove. Innitou Canoe Club hosts visitors as Paul Butler of Vesper Country Club arrives with sleeping bag ready for races Tuesday. Butler’s sailing canvas considered a strong challenger.
The high school regiment staged its eighteenth prize drill and field day at the fair grounds this afternoon. Cadets formed at the high school at one, marching with a band leading the procession that drew hundreds along the route. Soldiers in blue coats and white duck trousers presented a smart line as spectators witnessed the ongoing drills.
Mrs. Philip Riley aged 56 dies at 58 Cedar Street leaving a husband and four daughters. Funeral details to follow. Manuel Lemoin aged 8 infant son of Fannie and Joseph Lemoin dies at 6 Cottage Place off Lincoln Street. Exilda Bibeault aged 57 dies Friday at 5138 Wilder Street after a brief illness.
The funeral of Lawrence W. Walsh, son of Fred L. and Carrie W. Walsh, was held this morning from 98 Fremont Street with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Earlier, a burial occurred this afternoon at 6 Browns Court, also in the Catholic cemetery.
Mr M B Wright of the New Hampshire Soldiers Home will visit friend Dr F C Plunkett for a few days. Mr F G Ripley returns from a brief vacation in Bingham Me. Barrett and Elizabeth Christine Farsrell plan to wed June 7 at the Farrell home, 266 Appleton. Miss Alice McShea of Lowell returns home after a stay with the McQuaid sisters. Charles C Terry of Hudson N Y visits Mrs Terry’s father Mr Jacob Barron. Mrs Terry formerly taught at Morrill school in Nev. George Whitaker, pastor of Trinity M E church East Cambridge, elected president of Portland University Portland OR. formerly led Worthen Street church here. George H Wood, Central Street jeweler, returns from a multi‑state tour and sails June 7 on the St Paul to London with Mrs Wood for months of travel in Britain and France. Rev Charles L Merriam to deliver Memorial Day address at Kingston. Dr Robert Holgate, brother of Samuel Holgate, arrives from England with family and will reside in Lowell. Mr and Mrs Joseph Northrop of 84 Agawam Street observe their 25th wedding anniversary with friends. Rev John Norberry of Wesley Church to return to Lowell late June to resume duties. Mr Charles S Jackson, Belvidere Woolen Mills overseer, to Middlesex Mills. Saturday presentation of gold chain and charm to Jackson via James Co Usher.
