In Portsmouth New Hampshire on May 19 Charles Otis, insane, attempted to kill his wife and himself Saturday night. He wandered the woods frightening locals, briefly resurfacing at his house before fleeing again. Police plan to organize a posse this afternoon to capture him as sightings continue.
Twelve hundred spectators saw a tight game as Boston edged St Louis 3 to 2. Both Hart and Nichols pitched superbly with equal support. each side totaled six hits and committed two errors.
In Vivian on the Norfolk and Western line a game between colored minors ended after Jim Garrigan attempted a home run but was ruled out. He left, returned with a shotgun and fatally wounded umpire Charley Hunt with buckshot. A new umpire finished the game as Garrigan participated.
New York on May 19 Charles F Schroeder a prominent young businessman and his wife were descending Palisades road by bicycle toward the Weehawken ferry when he lost control and fell 25 feet onto rocks. He suffered a compound skull fracture and died yesterday at Roosevelt Hospital.

Mrs Ashcraft a Wichita widow was arrested on a complaint by T A Fawcett who charges she kissed him while he walked with his wife yesterday. Ashcraft says the kiss was intended for Mrs Fawcett.
Osage City Kansas on May 19 reports the Osage company has closed all mines except one, putting 500 workers out of employment. A dynamite blast blocked the remaining mine entrance yesterday, likely carried out by unemployed men.
In Cleveland on May 19 the general Methodist Episcopal conference elected Rev. C. C. McCabe known as Chaplain McCabe bishop on the 18th ballot, with a plurality of eight votes.
A large barn owned by George Ives, a wealthy brick manufacturer in New Haven, Conn, burned down this morning. One man perished in the fire and 15 horses were killed, including a horse valued at 1000 dollars.
In baseball results, Cleveland defeats Baltimore 4 to 3, Cincinnati beats Philadelphia 9 to 5, Louisville over Washington 5 to 3, Chicago trounces New York 15 to 3, while Brooklyn’s game against Pittsburgh was postponed due to rain.

In Amesbury on May 18 a plan is under way to form a band for the eighth regiment M. V. M. Several prominent musicians have notified the committee in charge of the project of their willingness to join. Reeves's American band has been engaged for the forthcoming encampment of the regiment.
Biddeford Maine May 18 operatives at Pepperell and Laconia mills began two thirds time work today after a pact reached last Friday between workers and management.
In Portland, Brockton beat the hosts 8 to 3. Springfield church leaders condemn Sunday baseball and vow non-support if the club plays. Portland GM Leonard reshuffles the roster releasing Patrick Friel while Red Hanrahan prepares to return. Other notes mention Zahner’s home run streak, Louisville’s interest, and baseball chatter about Amhers t vs Dartmouth and Cincinnati squad changes.
A major fire in Washington tonight destroyed 22 buildings with contents in about two hours. Two firemen died and four were seriously injured by falling walls. The district along B street and Louisiana to 9th and 10th streets housed commission and wholesale houses. The blaze, starting at a Postal Telegraph branch on B street, was attributed to a lightning strike during a thunderstorm. Loss on Louisiana street around 75000 and on B street about 50000.
A woods fire west of Plymouth endangers several dwellings between Summer and Samoset streets as a 40 mph southwesterly wind drives flames northeast toward Samoset. The Johnson Brown house was saved after firefighters evacuated the area, Morton Park narrowly escapes, and the full department remains ready amid dense smoke and burning woodland.
East Wareham May 18 Two forest fires burn in the vicinity. One destroyed three houses owned by Mrs S Fr Tobey Nelson Sever and P Johnson. The almshouse between Tremont and Wareham was threatened for a time. The blaze headed toward Plymouth. A second fire at Parkers Mills caused no serious damage though much property was threatened.
Kingston report says fires in the Catskills are now more serious than before with Stony Clove ablaze for miles and mountains scarred. Residents fight flames to save homes as efforts to reach Bik Park Preserve are urged before Spruce Mountain is reached.

Primitive Methodist conference in Providence fixes next convention in this city.
