Pittsburg May 17 Captain Duffy led a determined rally as his team overcame a late deficit to beat the opposition 6 to 4 before 4500 fans. The contest featured a spirited comeback and showcased the captain’s resolve to “turn a trick when it is necessary.” Other league results listed include Cleveland 8 New York, Cincinnati 2 Brooklyn, and St. Louis 7 Washington 1 in the National League, with additional scores from the New England League and related fixtures.
A fire in the tenement at 2235 Stanton Street in New York fatally burned one woman who was escaping. Authorities suspect an incendiary set the blaze, noting frequent fires in the area.

Cricket results show Andover Merrimac seconds 40 over Lynn Lynns 95 with Harvard side at 52. Lynn Lynn Wanderers recorded 55 as Zingaris contributed in a low scoring day for local clubs.
In Quebec churches a pastoral letter signed by archbishops and bishops urged Catholics to vote only for candidates who commit to Parliament to support school laws for Manitoba. The document says Catholics owe this duty to God and their spiritual guides and warns against neglecting it.

Georgie Veres of Sparta married Anastasio Lumos in Lowell after years of distant courtship. Lumos, a Market Street restaurant proprietor, brought his bride from Greece to a Urban Hall ceremony with a Boston bridesmaid Miss Marie Antoinette Lionett and best man Michael Desmarais. Greek priest Rev Kalinkos led the service.
The May party for the benefit of the Ayer Home will be held at the Highland club house tomorrow night. An entertainment of high amateur talent features a rewritten opening scene of An Engaging Position with students and artists in quartets and solo acts. Mrs. C. M. Williams and Miss Josephine Coburn perform, a dance follows, and mandolin and vocal music accompany the second act.

Eight people attended a county hearing in North Chelmsford on W H Bent and others petitioning to lay out a road from Livingston Avenue and Princeton Street in Lowell to near the county truant school, then to the Groton Dunstable Tyngsboro junction. The hearing, largely formal, followed prior county engineer approval with minimal debate. Construction will begin promptly after decree.

Five year old Michael Hayes was playing on the floor at 24 Linden street when a boiling kettle of linseed oil spilled and ignited. One parent flung it away, the flame struck the wall and rebounded onto the child. He was rushed to St. John's hospital by ambulance and treated for head burns. injuries not expected to be fatal.

A Saturday afternoon fire near Lakeview Avenue, near Coburn Street, connected to D W C Farrington interests, caused about 200 dollars in roof loss.

Obituary notes Mrs Harriet Storer Motley wife of George Motley long resident of Lowell for sixty years. A devout church member at St Annes since 40 years active in charities and a life member and trustee of Old Ladies Home since 1867. Her death Sunday morning May 10 prompted pastor’s May sermon praising her gentle spiritual life. Earth loses heaven gains as she dies in the Lord.
Jonathan Rollins of 21 Eighteenth street dies at 68 after 50 years in Lowell. In business with Rollins & Sargent at 109 Central street for 35 years. partner Mr. Sargent died last fall. Rollins belonged to Mechanics lodge I. O. O. F and United Friends, leaves a widow.

Lieutenant Governor Wolcott presented the governor’s white silk flag bearing the Commonwealth seal to Mrs. Greenhalge. The flag, soiled during a prior Atlanta trip when frightened horses dragged it in the dust, has been restored to whiteness and was used at State headquarters in Framingham when the governor was in camp.
At an adjourned meeting of the directors held May 16 1896 the Prescott National Bank of Lowell adopts resolutions mourning the death of President Hapgood Wright. He is praised as an honest faithful officer who served the bank and community with probity and honor, and the directors will attend his funeral and send a copy of the resolutions to his family.
