Albany May 17 E Leroy Smith merchant shot yesterday died this morning raising deaths to two. Twenty five non union men were unloaded from a New York Central car near the city western limit escorted by a battalion of the Second regiment taken to the car barns. Three thousand troops in city. Hyde Park police failed to move cars. Smith weakened after 48 hours away from home. The dog kept close to the boy during the return.
Boston May 17. Mary Mahoney 28 of 32 Irving street Nashua N H is charged with larceny after $492 disappeared from John Carpenter of 25 Berkeley street Nashua. Police found $8 on her and $187 behind the fireplace but most money remains missing despite searches. Carpenter had been in the Revere house with the woman and later recovered about $200.
The body found in a Ninth Avenue house is identified as Rev. Fr. D. W. Phillips of St. Gabriel's Hamilton Pa. He recently met with J. P. Morgan about the threatened coal strike. Massage operator Kirk Stanley, whose rooms housed the body, is under arrest on suspicion.
New York May 11 7 James J Corbett’s saloon on Broadway was closed by police after closing hour. Officers entered and cleared the crowd while Corbett protested with a speech accusing personal spite for the shutdown while others stayed open after hours.
George Broderick, five, son of William F. Broderick of Tina Avenue, disappeared from home at 7 a.m. Tuesday and was found asleep in a swamp in the Blue Hill reservation Milton at 10 a.m. Wednesday after his St. Bernard led Officer Cameron to him. The boy was taken to the park superintendent's office.
Albert Steele faced a police court for the second time in three months on neglect charges. He denied guilt but was ordered jailed for four months until probation cut the sentence. he later received three months on probation with a $6 weekly support obligation after a bail reversal. Other cases included suspensions and fines for neglect, drunkenness, and larceny, plus a transfer of Charles Forrest to Nashua to return to his state farm.
In the Middlesex Women’s Club Bulletin dated Saturday May 18, a science class is planned to ride the 2.10 High street car to Fort Hill park. James Phelan, long affiliated with the undertaking business of P H Savage, has bought one of Fitchburg’s oldest undertakings establishments in his native city.
Mrs Margaret B Lyman seeks divorce and child custody as ex councilman Ralph B Lyman faces testimony from private detective Hector Hood detailing affairs with multiple young women. Witnesses described late night hotel visits, dressing Lyman in women’s clothes, and alleged threats. Decree nisi granted in part with other cases noted and continued.
San Francisco reports Mrs. McKinley’s condition unchanged yet improved since midnight. President McKinley remains at her side. cabinet members keep engagements as Ohio launch delays without his presence. Early morning bulletin notes a fairly comfortable night and marked improvement.
Lieutenant Lewis G Hunton issues General Order No 1 detailing parade assembly by 7 15 p m deadline Monday May 20 with units M C G M V M forming on Westford and Grand streets and others on Howard Chelmsford and Grand streets. Carriages assemble at Northern Depot by 8 o clock and the parade proceeds in specified order with bands veterans and militia. Any changes to the sequence will be printed in daily papers.
The committee on military affairs met at city hall to finalize plans for a parade and reception for Lowell volunteers returning from the Philippines. A reception in Boston will be organized, with no outsider expenses covered, and Arthur F. Salmon overseeing Boston arrangements. Local groups and three bands will participate, with a supper in Lowell and a possible special car. The procession ends at Huntington hall for speeches, with red fire along the route and Lowell’s welcome display on Huntington hall.
Mrs. William J. Bothwell of 454 Gorham street was seized by convulsions after taking oil of cedar in three doses totaling an ounce and a half. Dr. Gallagher treated her and she was moved to Emergency hospital where her condition improved by morning. The 35 year old mother of four is expected to recover in days. motive unclear.
Police received word from Lowell of a turnout driven by a intoxicated coachman and companion. Officers found a swell carriage and two bay horses. the team was taken, horses stabled, men housed at the Brunswick, and to be sent to Lowell today.

Waldo L Reeves of 16 Woodbury Street employed at Cady's box factory lost the second and third fingers of his left hand when it was caught in a stripping machine at work this morning. He was taken to Emergency Hospital for treatment where the amputation occurred at the first joint.
Alarm at 5.26 yesterday afternoon reported a diary fire in the vacant Peabody house on Wilder Street now owned by Dr. Sullivan. Firefighters found extensive blaze in the house and barn end, with the barn damaged only on the exterior. Church's agency insured the risk.
A horse belonging to Edward Cogger, a Paige street wood and coal dealer, bolted on Thursday evening. It struck a man holding the animal, plowed into Boott corporation’s iron gate at John street, toppled the gate, and the horse died after dragging itself into the yard. The employee declined to give his name and was knocked down. his legs were run over by the wagon wheels but he escaped serious injury.
Fred Jacques, employed by contractor W H Ward, was struck by a falling hoisting car in the gas house yard at about 10 30 this morning. He suffered a broken collar bone and an ugly scalp wound and was taken to Lowell General Hospital. Jacques resides in Cummiskey’s Alley.
Mayor Dimon leads Lowell opposition to a proposed act to extend corporate powers of the Lowell Lawrence and Haverhill Street Railway Company. Aldermen urge legislators to oppose as written, warning it would surrender street control to a foreign corporation and hinder future car service reforms.
