May 18 Lynn firemen six men, atop a 30 foot ladder against a second story blaze at 139 and 141 Oxford street, fall when the ladder collapses. One may die, three seriously hurt, two uninjured. Injured include Walter F. Martin, Louis A. Chapman, Robert P. Hamilton, Everett C. Mowatt, Charles A. Harradin, and Lieut. Carl Smith. The incident draws a large crowd and a replacement ladder is quickly raised. Loss set at 1200 dollars with 500 to the building, 600 to George A. Cole, and 100 to N. J. Brown.
A man believed to be L. E. Kimball a Northwood New Hampshire general store owner was found dead in the toilet room of the smoking car as the train passed Andover at 6 30 last night He was pronounced dead by a physician and a pocket rebate showing a Rochester to Dover cash fare helped identify him He was about 50 years old and the body was removed at Lowell Junction then taken to Lawrence.
Chicago May 18. Early last evening Alice Cusack a nurse employed by Mrs J H Lambert of 3953 Michigan Avenue was shot and killed in Washington park by an unknown man. She was playing with a Lambert child near the refectory where a crowd watched. A man came from a thicket fired twice then vanished. She died before spectators reached her.
San Francisco May 18 Brig. Gen. Frederick D. Grant and J. C. Bates arrived from Manila yesterday aboard the Sheridan. Calvin D. Titus, famed for scaling the Pekin wall, was also aboard en route to Annapolis for a special presidential appointment for bravery.
London May 18 The draft of Secretary Hay's proposals for a new Nicaraguan treaty was received from Lord Pauncefote in the last mail. It is a redraft of the Hay Pauncefote treaty with extensive annotations.
A married Lim erick man Michael M Burke and a young woman Mary R F Hodges face illicit co habitation charges after their arrest in Lowell. Burke and Hodges plead not guilty with defense by Jeremiah Crowley and Gardner W Pearson continuing the case to next Wednesday. Bail set at 300 each. Witnesses include Capt Kew Lieut Downey and Officer Somers. Police trial details reveal a long history with Burke’s wife from New York and a Civil War veteran providing funds and a pension. Additional cases note various fines and a bicycle theft case leading to reform school placement for a youth with no parents.
Albany May 17. No settlement reached after hours of talks between United Traction Co and strikers’ committee. City forces by 3000 guards guard lines as cars run tomorrow. Arbitration offered by common council, Monday deadline set. company claims vested right bars franchise loss. Gen. Supt. McNamara doubts any immediate agreement. Superior Court heard continued testimony in the McQuade divorce case. Police officer Curran and multiple witnesses testified to Mrs. McQuade s alleged intoxication and dissolute habits. Timothy Mackey denied the claims and a 17 year old resident testified about a August night in 1890 involving a whiskey bottle and arrest efforts. The trial resumes May 31 before Judge Lawton.
A petition and circulating discussion in Melrose push to revert to the old town government. Dissatisfaction over tax hikes and slow street improvements fuels the drive. Col. F. S. Hesseltine opposes the shift and leads the effort against reorganization. A public meeting date is not yet set.
Hon Edwin F Uhl former assistant secretary of state and ambassador to Germany died in Grand Rapids Michigan after a yearlong illness He was 56 and survived by his wife a daughter and two sons Uhl held notable posts including aide to Gresham and minister to Berlin during the Cleveland administration He was twice mayor of Grand Rapids and helped secure the Mora indemnity from Spain in a period of foreign policy upheaval
San Francisco on May 18 Cortelyou issued a brief report at 8 45 am saying Drs Hirschfielder Gibbons and Gashing met Dr Rixey at 8 and found Mrs McKinley's condition decidedly improved since last evening.
Thomas B. Wanamaker's country house at Meadowbrook was struck by lightning and destroyed this morning. The colonial structure, built in 1826 and rivaling a hotel in size, valued at about half a million, with irreplaceable art gallery items. Servants narrowly escaped as the blaze destroyed the residence.
San Francisco reports the battleship Ohio will be launched at 12 30 today with the President possibly attending if not detained. The ceremony proceeds under wartime anticipation as officials prepare for the formal launch event.

The Ole Tam Kermesse at Huntington Hall closed with a Grande Soiree Musicale to aid St. Joseph's school. The orchestra led by E C Avignuer performed well. Soloists N J LaVigne and Mrs Phil es Beauregard of Fall River received strong acclaim for Recollections of Youth and encores. Blanche Roussin and Ida Tarte sang two duets, plus a light comedy A Marriage Missed featuring Pascal and A A Racicot.
A meeting in the vestry chaired by H. D. Richardson accepted Rev Charles A Dickinson s resignation from Berkeley Temple amid illness. Dickinson, now in Sacramento Illinois, will be relieved of duties on Oct 1 and become pastor emeritus upon the official date. A three member committee was formed to draft further actions.
The trustees and deacons will choose a successor with a future meeting to present resolutions and a copy sent to Mr. Dickinson. Prayers were offered for Mrs. McWinley’s recovery at the pre meeting prayer gathering.

Lieut Lewis G Hunton, parade marshal, issues General Order No 2 appointing Lieut Joseph S Gillow of Company M as chief of staff. General Order No 3 names Lieut J M Kelsey of Company C as officer of the guard for Huntington hall and maintaining order therein.
J P Searle a Mexican War veteran will ride in the parade and has written a poem for the occasion at the request of the committee. Arthur Salmon visited Boston yesterday to confer with Adjutant General Dalton about when returning soldiers may arrive. The military affairs committee will depart Lowell on the 12 16 train Monday at noon.
Jerome F. Manning traveled to Cambridge to file a petition seeking an injunction to halt the use of 500 dollars for the reception of returning volunteers of the 26th regiment and the Memorial day appropriation, arguing city council committees cannot spend. The council’s military affairs panel plans the Monday reception. Republicans won’t nominate in ward 2, a heavily Democratic seat. Mayor Dimon authorized the wire inspector to oversee the relocation of Rogers street poles after reports of unauthorized work.
Rev Clayton Welles of Taunton will supply the Highland Congregational church pulpit tomorrow with the acting pastor Rev Holmes preaching at 10 50 a m and 6 30 p m We note Welles was a classmate of Rev Dr Warfield of First church and was once settled in Chicago near Rev Wm Bartlett Both ministers belong to the same club He now serves Taunton over Winslow Memorial church the leading church in that city The Highland church members show marked interest in hearing him
Inspectors Laflamme and Allen detained Arthur Baxter aged 18 in Lawrence on Friday for alleged larceny of a bicycle owned by Thomas Smith from Central Street curb Thursday night. The wheel disappeared while Smith was in Goodale's drug store and Baxter was found attempting to sell it on the street.
The Lexington College club excursion planned for today was postponed due to rain. The Vesper Country club annual canoe trip on the Nashua river is scheduled for May 26 from Ayer to Nashua.
