In San Francisco on May 16 the Associated Press reports Mrs. McKinley remains in critical condition with little chance of recovery. President McKinley sits at her bedside as she sinks after a difficult night. Access to the house is barred and traffic blocked to reduce commotion.
Jerome F. Manning led a Ward Three Republican meeting at the Branch street engine house attacking the bridge project, street railway profits, and aldermanic actions. Cleveland May 16 John Williams known as Steeple Jack for gilding church crosses died attempting to dash in front of a street car. Brave across the country for dangerous work he boasted of no accidents. He left no relatives and will be buried by the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators.
Boston May 16 at the 75th Congregational missionary anniversary Rev Dr Ezra H Byington of Newton collapsed at the breakfast table and died of heart failure. A prominent New England clergyman, he was 78, born in Binesburg Vermont and a University of Vermont graduate of 1852. He served pastorates in Windsor Vermont Montreal Brunswick Me and Monson Mass.
Hong Kong reports the Viceroy of Canton has signed a contract to remove the Macao barrier in the Canton river, an obstacle from the Franco-Chinese war era. He also silences native opposition to building new wharves, easing river traffic.
Paris May 16. Jacquelin, the French cyclist, won the world championship race over Major Taylor, the prominent American rider, in the one kilometer event today.
Portland Me May 16 Edward Graf fam and William Hands indicted for the murder of Clifford Mosher of Gorham. They pleaded not guilty.

Rev R A Greene of Grace church Lowell opened the morning session followed by Rev F W Perkins of Haverhill The afternoon began with a praise service led by Rev Allan Brown of Haverhill and featured addresses by Rev A B Bartlett of Manchester on So Things That We Might Learn From Other Denominations and Rev Mr Gibbs of Lawrence on Thin Worth Thinking About The conference concluded with a discussion led by Rev C B Fisher of Lowell and Rev Gibbs
