In police court Judge Hadley fined Michael J. Sullivan $12 after found guilty of stealing wire from Lowell Electric Light Co. Evidence showed a coil in his possession and admission of taking about 100 pounds over months to sell to a Boston man. Sullivan appealed then withdrew it. Additional cases included Mary Sweeney’s lease concealment, several drunkenness fines, and a speeding bicycle fine.

Miss Mary Emma Wooley was inaugurated as president of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley on May 15. Rev. Judson Smith of the board of trustees gave the first address, followed by Wooley. Miss Caroline Hazard of Wellesley fostered greetings from that college. Presidents Taylor of Vassar, Harris of Amherst, and Faunce of Brown attended as large crowds gathered for the ceremony.

Albert L. Evans, Brockton assistant city engineer, has been missing since Thursday night. City Engineer Charles Felton says Evans was last seen at city hall at 10 p.m. and books were in order. Evans, about 33, married but separated, was active in the Camera club and once named a tax collector candidate.
May 15 in New York a well known novelist and university settlement manager Edith Thomas shot herself in her King street office after years of nervousprostration. The 37 year old author of Your Money or Your Life Cross Keys and A Modern Rosa lind faced warning from doctors about exhaustion and had recently resumed work at the settlement. Her husband Bond Valentine and a Miss Hedges rushed to the room as the revolver fired and then broke in to find her dead.
