Analysis notes that during the six years of drought in Australia about 50 million sheep have perished. The city of Bombay now reports 770000 residents, a drop of 50000 since 1891.
A Manila sourced war department report says natives killed or tortured U.S. soldiers across several towns. Privates Dugan Hay Tracey and Denehy murdered or mutilated. Nolan burned. O’Hearn slain after capture. Lieut. Wagner assassinated in uniformed disguise. ambush at Jaro. butcheries at Leganes Mina and a burial alive near Barotec Nuevo. American troops deemed humane by contrast, surprising outsiders.
Relatives and friends gathered at 55 Center Street Methuen to honor Mr and Mrs John Firth on their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The couple born in Dewsbury England lived there until moving to Methuen eleven years ago. They have five children three living Rylah Firth Hannah Marshall and Thomas Ward grandchildren eleven and one great grandchild. Mr Firth 74 and Mrs Firth 76. They received many gifts and enjoyed music.
The Hamburg marine board reports the schooner Arina under Capt Mack is lost with her entire crew. She sailed from Hamburg May 2 bound for Matupi Ordenderson island in Blanche Bay German New Britain and has not been heard from since May 1900.
Traders National Bank transacts general banking business and offers foreign exchange services in English French German and Swedish monies. It provides safety deposit boxes private rooms savings accounts at 4 percent per annum compounded semi annually with monthly interest and a ladies banking room. Located at Middlesex Street 30 to 46 and Post Office Avenue 11 to 24 with hours 8 to 4 weekdays and 8 to 1 Saturday plus evening hours 7 to 9.
Albany May 13. United Traction Co lines in Albany and Troy may run tonight after directors, after resisting wage demands, agreed at midnight to arbitration and to treat with union officers, recognizing the unions officially amid a weakening strike.
The cruiser Buffalo under Commander Hutchins arrived from the Philippines via the Suez Canal. Departing Manila April 4, the ship completed the voyage in 88 days carrying 591 seamen and 57 marines. It also bore the bodies of Commander Jesse M. Roper of the Petrel and Passed Assistant Surgeon Stoughton who died in Hong Kong.
Boston May 13 Mrs Annie Arthur 27 took her own life by leaping from a third story window at her home. She was described as an inveterate cigarette smoker and had previously attempted suicide.
A report from Carbondale Illinois says the excursion ship City of Paducah struck a snag off Grand Tower and 35 people are feared dead. The incident involved a large excursion party on board.
London dispatch reports Archbishop Lewis of Ontario died May 4 aboard the passenger liner Menominee while en route to Egypt after contracting pneumonia. He had been seriously ill before departure and planned to continue to Egypt.
Weymouth England May 12 The Shamrocks began the noon contest under a hard fresh wind and rough sea Shamrock T won by five minutes over Shamrock Sr in the 20 mile course.
May 12 dispatch reports Lizzie Jackson alias Lizzie Johnson, 24, mulatto, linked to James Fairfax theft after a 15 dollar pocket loss. Martha Smith, 23, Lynn colored, aided by Jackson, claimed Boston trip. $28 recovered with the money. Smith corroborates Fairfax. Jackson’s tale contradicted. Police found the two lodging with the money. Smith kept $2. Fairfax’s hip pocket theft occurred on Water street near Elm street.
May 12 dispatch from San Francisco reports the 26th Regiment's quiet camp day after a 16 to 9 baseball defeat. Several companies prepare to depart by train to Boston, with officers and men slated for various routes home via Portland, Buffalo, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Rhode Island.
In a sharp session Judge Hadley admonished John McKenna for neglecting his wife and two children, ordering six months probation with three months jail if he fails to provide for his family. Other drunks received jail terms, while Jalbert faced six months for larceny and a $500 bond for higher court review. Albert St Louis paid $2 for obstructing the street.
The May session of the Lawton Superior Court opened with few trials and a morning of motions. Verdicts favored plaintiffs in two cases against Suburban Street Railway and for $2300 and $600, while other motions for new trials were denied or argued. An uncontested divorce list is set for tomorrow.
The Ben Hur lecture announced for last week at Notre Dame academy will now be held Wednesday afternoon at 4.30. Tickets originally issued will be valid for the rescheduled event.
The Lowell division of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reports a widespread linemen strike across eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. About 20 Lowell linemen quit, demand nine hour days and 3 dollars per day, with holidays and rainy day pay. Several Worchester and Ayer men joined in, and Lawrence Nashua and Fitchburg workers are relocating to Lowell as headquarters form. The union says secure concessions, as the company signaled willingness to grant all but the 50 cent daily wage rise.
All building stopped as plasterers tenderers refuse eight hour day and 2.25 minimum wage after a conference with master plasterers and builders. The parties compromise on wage cuts only if an eight hour day is delayed, a proposal rejected. Today carpenters join the strike and Lowell city work is largely at a standstill.
The Lowell carpenters strike remains an obstacle to local building. An open meeting addressed by Boston's American Federation of Labor delegates drew much enthusiasm at 22 Middle Street. Beginning Wednesday, strikers will receive strike benefits from the Carpenters and Joiners Union of America.
London May 13 Kitchener reports Grenfell occupied Louistrichart capturing 50 Boers with rifles. Louis trichart previously held by six Boers with 40 surrendered Boers. Other columns report eight Boers killed 20 wounded 132 prisoners 24 surrenders and a machine gun 6400 rounds of ammunition 150 wagons and 870 horses captured.
London on May 13 reports Rear Admiral Schley, informed of a family member's illness, has cut short his stay and booked passage back to New York for Wednesday.
City authorities released two expert reports on Pawtucket bridge after inspection by Supt. Brady and engineer J. P. Snow. Brady urges keeping the bridge closed except for foot travel until repairs are done, estimating 5200 to 5900 dollars for strengthening and replacement work, with limited carriage loads and shifted car tracks. Snow finds iron work generally sound but timber and support details weak, recommending engineering calculations for heavier loads and possible partial reopening with precautions. Mayor Dimon may issue his own critique to the city council.
About one hundred members of Company C and F, Sixth Massachusetts, will sign a petition to Governor Charles H. Allen of Porto Rico on behalf of Senor Felix Seijo, a former wealthy planter of Utuado, who aided the troops during the Porto Rican campaign. They seek a government position for Seijo after losing his property in the August 1899 cyclone. Separately, Company C held a trial shoot at the Dracut rifle range to select its Middlesex Military title league team, with Captain Kittredge qualifying as a 600-yard sharpshooter. The probable lineup for next Saturday’s match against Company I of Stoneham at the Dracut range includes Private James N. Greig, Priv. Flynn, Sergt. Chandler, Capt. Kittredge, Priv. Mitchell, Lieut. Kelsey, Corp. Saunders, Priv. Linscott, Priv. Stanley, Priv. Faneuf, Corp. Swaby, Sergt. Berry, Corp. Peterson, Sergt. Clogston, Priv. Williams, Priv. Harriman, with substitutes Flanagan and Kirk.
